Just bought 95 pounds of Hutterite chickens (20) for $1.35/pound
    8 in the freezer whole.
8 to be butchered up and frozen as thighs/breasts/wings, etc.
4 into brine to be smoked on Saturday. These will be deboned and frozen or canned for lunch meat.

The bones from the eight will be boiled down for broth, which will be canned or frozen.

I am going to look into raising chickens next summer. SERIOUSLY!
Would sure be nice to add fresh eggs to the mix for the summer.

You could probably get eggs all year. Egg production has more to do with light, than cold. I run a light on a timer in my chicken coop, and make sure they get at least 14 hours of light a day.

I wouldn't want to try to over winter them, buy chicks in the spring, final slaughter in the fall. Remember where I am... -35F for months...

I think you could still over winter some breeds. Of course they would need to be able to get out the weather when they need to. Look into the Chanteclers and buckeyes breeds.

Interesting thought Helo... but remember with 4-5+ feet of snow... they would require a crap load of feed.

They would require 100% feed for sure.

Not if you built a coop like ours! Cold tolerant chickens will do just fine!
    I apologize for nothing...
