As mentioned previously I have an ACH helmet that I've done up for the world has gone to shit situations. It's a standard ACH helmet with an OPScore H-nape chin strap, Tactical Tailor Multicam cover, ESS goggles and a Surefire helmet light.

For non EOTWAWKI situations, you can easily remove the goggles and surefire light and toss it on for working in dangerous areas such as felling trees or clean up post hurricane/tornado.

Honestly I've not worn it for more than a few minutes around the house but I'm hoping to find a day this summer to take it out to some family land so I can spend the day shooting and give it a go to see what needs adjusted.

Funny you should ask....I was waiting on the paint to dry to bring it in and snap pictures.

I drilled the holes for the Opscore H-nape chin strap and then painted it up.

Used a mixture of Airvoe paints that included tan, coyote, OD drab and field green and used a long needle pine for the cammo effect.

Gotta order a pad kit from SKD tactical and she'll be ready for classes and whatnot.

Thanks guys. It's actually flat and not as shiny as my cell phone pics might lead you to believe. I'll try to take better ones later.

The paint as dried really well and the pattern is much nicer than what is visible above.

Mine went to the guy that donated the helmets. I'll have to make another.

I still see a Pro-Tec A Alpha half shell in my future.

Here's my MICH, It has seen better days. This is the same helmet I had while on deployment. Still set up the same.

And here's my Pro-Tec, for when I'm more concerned about bumping my noggin than ballistic protection.

Went with the splotchy camo on this one.

I still prefer the old GI steel brain bucket, for the simple reason that it is still better for using to heat water, so you can wash your feet.... That said, I was never exposed to the PASGT helmets, they came long after my time around such things. I still have my old steel one, though.

I had a PASGT in basic, but those have gone the way of the dodo bird. Everyone is running the MICH's now. I cant say that was a bad decision. More protection, better visibility, less weight, and above all, more comfortable.

Ive got 3 helmets floating around here in the gear, a old PASGT, a ACH and a MICH, looking to get one of those CVC shells myself here soon.

I have a standard issue Kevlar helmet, and I will have it for the next 30 months at least. It has a digital woodland camo pattern. I have ESS goggles, but not the prescription inserts, I'm working on that. I have an advanced padding system in it.

Here is my cvc helmet. Tan and dusted with dark earth with one velcro patch on the front. I have the goggle tabs on the back and black ESS goggles for it but I don't want to stretch out the head strap. Also running a tan chin strap.

Stig I am saving my pennies for a new Ops Core FAST ballistic helmet for work. It is time to replace my old TC2002 helmet.
ops-core: FAST Ballistic Helmet (http://www.ops-core.com/FAST_Ballistic_Helmet_P7C6.cfm)

I'm going to refurbish my old one to keep as an extra. As for wearing one around the house, my neighbors complain when I wear mine while mowing the lawn..........well maybe it is the AR and the 1911 that I was wearing......

So I finally got around to ordering in the velcro and pads to complete the CVG helmet I was working on.

I got the shell in a trade (thank you brother Izzy), the h-nape harness is from OpsCore and the pads from SKDtactical. Custom paint job was completed out in the backyard with the airvoe paints I use on the rifles. A pretty simple project really. Hardest part was cleaning the kevlar fibers off the drill bits I used to put in the OpsCore harness mounting holes.

At the risk of opening myself to public ridicule and scorn, here's how it turned out as a completed item.....

While I like the coverage of the ACH better, this will be a great option for training classes where I need the ear-pro, or for post-hurricane cleanup when I just want to keep a tree from falling through my noggin. Overall a fairly cheep-ish option for some head protection.

This fella?

I didn't realize the black horn-rimmed look was back. Maybe I should sport my Wiley-X's on an every day basis?

Serious question about helmet pad placement....

For those with operational experience, how to you lay out the pads to allow your cover to fit as snugly down on your head as possible? Seems like the shape of my melon pushes the helmet upwards and I have a hell of a time getting it to synch down as low as I'd like.

By way of comparison, here's my ACH helmet. Can't do the side and rear pictures until Mrs Stig gets home. I've continued to play with pad placement so I can push the helmet down as low as possible. You can see from my cheek fat ( :( ) that the strap is still pretty tight.

I like the ess goggles better than the wiley-x glasses. The wiley's fog if you fart near them, let alone breath.

For the record, I have no illusions that I'm going to play GI Joe, or post-apocalyptic wet dreams of running around playing lightfighter. I'm a middle aged, out of shape, doughball. I have the helmets, however, for head protection for a wide range of situations. I can think of a number of non military situations where eye and head protection is critical and a mounted light is handy.

Mil-surp gear in Canada is hit and miss at the best of times, and tends to be at least 2 or 3 wars behind. :(

In the interim, I make do with what I can. and got the whole family set up with the best I could:

Some links for you stig:

http://downrangegear.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/down-range-gear-enhanced-strap-keepers-81872.jpg these run at $15 a set. the contact for them is: downrangegear@gmail.com I dont have a set of these (YET) I am going to get 3 for my 3 kevlar helmets. They seem badass for keeping my ESS goggles on the helmet. Once I get a set, I am going to market it to other sailors if its worth a shit.

Multicam / special ops camouflage tactical goggle cover | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Multicam-special-ops-camouflage-tactical-goggle-cover-/251023531349?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a722b1d55#ht_500wt_1202) This guy makes his own shit in Maine. I got a MARPAT on one side, and Coyote tan on another cover for the ESS goggles. They look to be badass, I cannot tell until summer.

and here is the link to how I have set up my helmet for the last 4 years. I have the helmet, a PASGT (as far as I know. Its fullsize and bulletproof so I dont ask), and this upgrade kit Ballistic Helmet Pads - Military Helmet Liners (http://www.oregonaero.com/ballistic-helmet-upgrades/helmet-liner-pads) BLU kit kit #95080 you will have to find out where to get it online. It is aftermarket awesomeness. EXTREME comfort in cold, hot, dust, and rain.

http://s7.postimage.org/u8c2seg23/DSCN2383.jpg Sorry for the straps in the way, I cannot do anything about that.

Hey Stig, I don't know if you're looking for a helmet bag or not, but I found countycomms EOD Utility Bag (http://countycomm.com/minebag.html) is sized about perfectly for a CVC shell. There's ample room for it, a set of electronic ear pro, and a set of eye pro without it getting jammed up or even being "too" loose. Figured I'd let you know. Its how I'm carrying mine now.
