Here are the two calves Kodiak and I picked up to feed for a while. My girls named them Bert and Ernie. We got a pretty good deal on these and just couldn't say no. (of course Kodiak ran out and bought a new grill)

Don't forget to use their manure for fertilizer. But remember, research how potent it is first :)

Gunner - using it for compost means someone will have to get it out of the barn and put it in a pile for it to be turned and age. Oh wait! That's going to be my job!

cattle manure is really quite bad for gardening... it needs to age a LOT to set. I don`t remember why, but up here we always try to get 4+ yo horse manure, or cow manure that is 10+ yo.

That;s some nice looking meat! when is the bbq?

I looked at a few different sites to check the manure/compost time frame. Most stated at least 6 months, a year was best. Also said not to use pig manure due to possible parasites being passed along. Here is one of the sites I read up on. I'm at work so it won't let me link it but here it is just in case anybody needs it.

When we had cattle we. Would dig it out one fall then spread it on the garden & fields the next fall. Never had any issues i can think of from it.

But it keeps your hands warm on cold mornings. You are in trouble letting your kids name their new PETS Bert and Ernie........
