These have got to be one of the greatest things ever made. I had a few when I was a kid, and they kept me occupied for hours every day. conversely, the less I played with them, the more productive they were. Some of the things I've caught are minnow, crayfish, frogs, leeches, turtles, grasshoppers, snakes, butterflies...

most of which could be eaten as food, or used as bait to catch more food. I was just reminiscing about these things with a buddy, and realized that I REALLY need to add a couple of these to my preps, and to my general use pile too for camping/fishing.

I had metal ones like this:

Cabela's: Frabill Vinyl-Coated Round Minnow Trap (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Frabill-Vinyl-Coated-Round-Minnow-Trap/738270.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch%2F%3FN%3D%26No%3D80 %26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dminnow%26Ntx%3Dmode%2 52Bmatchallpartial%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26WTz_st%3D%26WTz_stype%3DSP%26form _state%3DsearchForm%26recordsPerPage%3D80%26search %3Dminnow%26searchTypeByFilter%3DAllProducts&Ntt=minnow&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products)

But I think I'm going to try a couple like this (I like how it can be folded up for transportation):

Cabela's: Promar Collapsible Minnow Traps (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Promar-Collapsible-Minnow-Traps/700636.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch%2F%3FN%3D%26No%3D80 %26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dminnow%26Ntx%3Dmode%2 52Bmatchallpartial%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26WTz_st%3D%26WTz_stype%3DSP%26form _state%3DsearchForm%26recordsPerPage%3D80%26search %3Dminnow%26searchTypeByFilter%3DAllProducts&Ntt=minnow&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products)

Excellent idea. My grandpa kept one or two in his ponds before a fishing trip. We always had all the bait we could use. You could eat it if need be.

Those are a lot cheaper than i expected as well.

I have one like the top one, but the two pieces don't fit together real good. Minnows can get out of it.

I've used the metal one like the Cabelas when I was a kid. It belonged to my Uncle. As I've gotten older, I've gotten cheap, and stingy. Now I make my own out of two liter bottles. This pic isn't of one of mine, but it's so close, it could be.

I use wire and/or paperclips punched through the walls of the bottle and lid for easy removal of the minnows.

I remember having one like that as a kid. I had to macGyver it with one of these:

Slow... How do you secure the top of the bottle in? the cord is for the weight? so it sits upright in the water?

pretty slick!

does it work for crawfish too?

Sniper, I've never caught a snalke before. Are they like a Canadian fur snake? Just wondering.

For crawfish (crawdads in the Ozarks) I have used a homemade version of this:

edited, just for you grumps. ;)

we use those nets for minnow, when we're out fishing. toss it, wait a minute and pull it back quick. same when using it for crawfish?

IDT, the commercial minnow catchers around here use those ones. I wouldn't want to carry them around too far, although yours does look smaller, and less metalic than theirs here

Here is an example of a few I made for catching crayfish and crab. It won't catch minnows though. Tie your rotten chicken parts or what ever you got in the center as a bait... let set for 15 min to 1/2 and haul in before your bait gets devoured. :)

We set up at night at the end of a boat dock with the ol' Coleman cranked up with a big ol' pot of seasoned water a boiling and a big ol' cooler of ice to pack the bounty into after they have been processed and put into gallon ziplock bags. :)

It also works well to haul larger caught fish by fishing pole up when your fishing from piers or bridges.

I just saw Gander Mountain has some rectangular traps in stock, and read this thread soon after, it sounded like a lot of fun, but I wasn't sure where I could put one.

I've since found two places. I'll let you know how they do in a few weeks ;)
