View Full Version : Getting a Dedicated BOV

Well I'm getting my first dedicated bug out truck. Im very excited, trading a old dirt bike for a 1979 Dodge 150 4x4. She is cosmetically ugly with surface rust but no holes. The bed is banged up so I'm planning a wooden bed maybe with hidden storage. The motor is a new 360 with a rebuilt trans. 4wd works great.

My goal is to have some minor fun off road so it has some dual purpose but it will be very capable. Flat paint tan or green paint, lift, lockers, good tires, extra fuel cap, maybe a small water tank, ect. Lots of ideas but I'm excited. I'll post pics when I get her.

Sounds like a good truck for the purpose. Can't wait to see pics. You gonna do the work on it?

Hopefully some pics will come tonight. I plan on doing the work...it'll be my first project like this but I can do it I'm sure. I'm fairly good at mechanical work, and wood working.

Awesome. Maybe I can talk you into dropping a multi-fuel engine in it later on!

Lol. J/k! Maybe...

If you need a hand on any of it let me know.

Have you gave any thought to a winch or small air compressor? Both could make nice additions.

Mtr you may be able too. I got the truck and it runs like a top. Newer 360 and 727 trans. 4 wheel drive works great even though the truck has bald tires it pulled through some deep mud.

A compressor and winch are in the plans. I am hoping for some neat little projects throughout, there's lots of space for innovation. The bed is nicer than expected so it'll stay.

The whole truck will be getting od green paint, tan/multi cam interior ;), and matte black accents like the grille and such. I am hoping for two batteries, cb and VHF radios, increased fuel capacity, possibly a solar panel on the roof or some type of solar system. Also I am thinking of water storage on board somewhere.

She has no rust holes and could use a little work but it will be nice when done. Here's some pics.

I've got a magazine floating around somewhere (I think its "RECOIL") that displays a BOV with a 13 gallon water container where the spare tire used to hang underbody between the frame. I've been kicking that idea around for my own vehicle since, and it may work here for you. I'll try to find the mag and get the particulars if you're interested.

I'm very interested in that. I think it would be a very good idea and a fairly easy project.

I stripped all the parts off the truck and began sanding the rust spots. I will post pictures as the project progresses through the stages.

Thanks izzy. I knew it was either that one or the last issue of Surefire's Combat Tactics.

Thanks guys I've been doing some research and am thinking of a 10-20 gallon tank with a remote mount 12v pump possibly in the cab, the tank will proly be on the passenger side under the bed. Hoses will run to the cab, I have a small drill pump that can be a backup.

I stripped the truck down. Then I started sanding the rust. Hopefully the bondo will be done in a few days, and I'll be laying primer down. It'll be my first experience painting so well see :).

Nice project truck! I like the ideas you have on what to do with it. Lots of possibilities.

You may be able to find a rear bumper water tank for your truck in the aftermarket suppliers. Years ago a friend of mine had a rear bumper water tank on his Jeep similar to this.

that looks cool, but That seems awfully expensive for 2.3 liters of water. I think I'd just build an onboard box in the back, and line it with Jerrycans. do the whole thing for less than $100 and have 25-30 gallons, centered weight wise right in the middle of the truck, and possibly put a spare fuel tank underneath, or even a storage compartment.

IMO

Or you could take a 6" section of steel pipe, weld brackets on it for the mounts and use threaded end caps to make your reservoir. Now that I've given you the idea Sniper, I expect to see some plans and a prototype. I'll give you a nice fat kitty when you've completed the assignment.;)

Wow that's a really nice rig. Mine won't be quite that nice lol. The outside body is about a 1/4 way sanded.

However the interior is now coyote tan with black accents. It's progressing. I'll be needing to touch up a few spots, reinstall and replace weatherstripping and I'll be done there.

I'm getting excited...thinking of using the pipe and caps for water storage. Well see I'm still developing those plans.

Ok here's my first update in a while. I've spent the last while sanding, bonding, painting and the such. The paint is on nice but my body work isn't great...who cares its a BOV.

As for prep related activities I got all the lights working, red lights inside for night vision. I mounted my inverter, extinguisher, tow straps and hardware, radio, and med supplies in the cab. The electric fuel pump and switching assemblies were dead so I added a manual switch for the two tanks.

I will be adding a cap on the back and some nice tires. Here's some pics...the dash is torn apart due to chasing some electrical gauge issues.

Nice work!

want a tip to help out with basic maintenance? unplug the negative side of the battery when not in use. also hook up a fuel cut off on the line to the motor so you can run the carburetor out and keep it free of varnish. oh and clean out the carb real good q tips and kerosene will be perfect for the job. this will help it start more quickly and help it run better more horsepower whole nine. nice truck by the way i got a old chevy kinda like that

Beautiful Job man! Is that a stock 360 with the 2bl carb? Are you running mechanical gauges? The less electronics the better. By the way, that "olive drab" sure do look funny............
As far as the pipes and bumper suggestions are going I haven't heard "spare air" yet. Used as a pressurized cylinder, I have seen that a time or two. It's going to look damn nice when you're done though.

Be safe.............the night is your friend.
