View Full Version : Murphy's Law of Threads

Grumpy Old Man
05-16-2012, 11:16 PM
I've been noticing what happens to some of our threads in spite of our best intentions and I believe that drift, hijack temper flares, etc are all the fault of Murphy. So I have begun formulating, and subsequently postulating, Murphy's Laws of Threads. I will begin with a few of the more obvious.

1) All threads will take on a life of their own far beyond what the OP intended.

2) Even this most innocuous thread will piss someone off.

3) If you have examined the thread topic and determined that there are 5 ways it could derail and take measures to prevent those 5 ways, a new and unforseen 6th way will appear and cause thread derailment.

4) A wiseass will always pop up in a serious thread to derail it, usually with consequences. This is a corollary to Law #2.

5) The goofiest thread topic will result in the longest lived thread.

6) Any decision made by staff, mods or admin will be subject to criticism, condemnation and ridicule. Corollary: if said decision is not subjected to criticism, condemnation or ridicule, it is clearly wrong!!

And as always: Murphy was an optimist.

hell with it let a conversation have life how many times have you been in a conversation about football and end up talking about some blonde you knew 30 years ago. besides the links between topics are ultimately the reason we all speak of them the need for gasoline raises questions about heat and electricty and solar vs wind or water wether we choose to completely stay on topic is unconsiquential. as our bonds in brotherhood of survival are what really matters anyway. how often have you spoken about keeping to the code of men when it comes to dealing with others and the ultimate payoff when shtf ? do you hand your neighbors beers and speak to them play with thier kids and feed others when grilling because these will pay dividends when bad happens they will come to you and ask how you are. speaking of which i got 20 min till work is over and i go get a beer

Grumpy I'm trying to come up with some wise ass comment. ..........Nothing!

Tomp You are right, even in normal conversation, not just on forum's, at least for me. I'll be on some topic to someone and end up deep in discussion about something totally unreated. We do still tend to cover some needed infromation.

I always figured that once a question was answered all bets were off and it was party time ???

and then there is always the guy who bumps it a year later to tell you his brother or dad had one just like it

Please note that there is a Grumpy's Sports Bar and Grill in Mammoth Lakes!

Murphy's Laws of Threads #Whatever: The number of wiseasses in a thread is inversely proportional to the square root of the number of regular posters in the forum.

And Everyone who posts in a thread has the capability to make a really stupid offensive post. Corollary: If you think it is witty or funny, it's most likely stupid or offensive.

So I saw some protestors today outside of Volk Field Air Base protesting the military, going to go harass them on the way to work. More to come later on this.

Rule #2 of the internet.

If you see it on facebook, it must be true.

Or so the drama kings and queens say...

rule #3

Anything anyone "shares" on facebook is cursed to annoying an exponentially higher number of people than those that share and or like it.

Rule #4

when you attempt to block said annoying people, facebook's blocking system fails at the only time you want / need it to...

So apparently. . . protesters outside of Volk field had issues with the cost of human life in the war in Afghanistan. . . and the use of drones. So me being the little pot-stirrer. . I asked one guy. . . which would he prefer then. . . the loss of American soldiers, or using the drones to mitigate the loss of American soldiers?

Amazingly. . . he looked at me with a dumbfounded look. . .and told me. . . "you just dont get it, you have to see the damage its causing in Afghanistan." My reply. . ."Of course I get it, Ive been to Afghanistan and fought there, have you?" His response. . .*dumbfounded look* "uh. . .no I havent, can you leave me alone please, Im not comfortable with your tone" I had to just walk away, nothing more annoying than a uninformed protestor. Its like a rebel without a clue. At least the code pink bitches and Westoboro Baptist shitheads werent afraid to get in my face in Berkley.
