This could end badly but there is no way that he could break the sound barrier unassisted without rocket power. A falling object no matter the size or shape will not or can not fall faster that 250 per hr. It's just the laws of physics in our atmosphere.

From Kittingers jumps came a lot of data that was applied to bettering the chance of survival of a high altitude ejection and bailout.
Crazy....maybe but someone had to do it.During that time the pressure suit glove didn't have a positive lock,just closed position ,he lost his glove.The next line of suits had them.

But that is the reason why he could break the sound barrier. He wont be in an atmosphere with any air (that is what causes the resistance that keeps you at 250mph) He will have an air source for 2 reasons. 1> there is no air and 2> when there is air it would be to cold to breath.

His pressure suit provides his atmosphere at those altitudes,he'll have to carry his o2 supply with him.His suit will also provide him protection from the cold.

When you watched the shuttle descend the hull of the craft would blaze with heat. This heat was caused by the speed of entering the atmosphere of earth. That speed and the air causes friction which will slow the craft down a little.

So the skydiver desiring to break the current record will be at that point where the air is negligible (hardly any present). So when he 'jumps' he is almost in space so his reentry will not be hindered by the atmosphere (air) so his speed is not limited to 250MPH.

Understand this information comes from a non technically educated person in this field of science So it can most likely be described in a more technical manor. And yes I could also be wrong.

Yeah I got cha. When I made my first post on this topic I had already had a few (wink) and I posted a reply before I even read or watched video. :o LOL All I was thinking at the time was how bad I would like to base jump in a flying squirrel suit.

Next attempt to break world free-fall record is set for Sunday

After two postponed attempts, daredevil Felix Baumgartner will try again to break the world’s free-fall record at 23 miles above Roswell, N.M. and become the first skydiver to surpass the speed of sound.

The next attempt at the jump from 120,000 feet is now set for Sunday.

Baumgartner, 43, is seeking to shatter a record set by Air Force test pilot Joe Kittinger in 1960. The world record stands at 102,800 feet, more than 19 miles.

Baumgartner's mission was first set for Monday then again Tuesday, but both attempts were canceled due to high winds. Officials have said that an attempt at the feat can be made only if winds on the ground do not exceed 3 mph.

Calm weather is crucial because Baumgartner is to be carried skyward by a massive, helium-filled balloon inside a pressurized capsule. The trip will take up to three hours, and temperatures will fall to as low as minus-70 degrees.

Once Baumgartner jumps from the capsule, he's expected to become supersonic within 35 seconds and ultimately reach about 700 mph.

After free falling an additional five minutes, he will deploy his parachute. About 15 minutes later, Baumgartner should reach the ground. In all, his descent is expected to last up to 20 minutes. It's a mission that's "beyond extreme," according to at least one observer.
The perilous stunt, called Stratos, is funded by the energy drink company Red Bull and is slated to be webcast live.
