I missed it yesterday, but June 25, 1876 was the Battle of the Little Bighorn, which was fought on the Little Bighorn River in south central Montana. The Lakota and Cheyenne Nations referred to this River as the Greasy Grass, because the grass there was very nutritious for their ponies and made them fatten up nicely.

Yesterday, was the 136th anniversary of that battle, where Crazy Horse (Actually better translated as His-horse-is-spirited or his-horse-is-dancing),Gall and Sitting Bull led the Lakota and Cheyenne against the 7th Cavalry commanded by George Armstrong Custer, a Colonel at the time ( he was breveted a Brigadier General during the War of Northern Aggression). Custer's younger brother Thomas, who was the only soldier to be awarded 2 Congressional Medals of Honor during the War of Northern Aggression, also perished at that encounter.

This was perhaps the greatest battle of what are known as "The Indian Wars". 2 memorial songs follow; one for each side.
