We as a group....have made some preparations for being able to get around the farm post event.

I went a bit happy about a year ago and bought 6 fairly high end bicycles at swap meets and yard sales....I then serviced all of them....bought a few extra replacement parts...and decked a couple out with "luggage" racks.

before...

after....

This is one of the 6....and the last one. They are now stored at the BOL...hung upside down in the storage building.

I have also began working on this project....

It has been completely torn apart and gone through.....painted....and is being assembled now. it is a Honda XR200R.

I just picked up a Suzuki 350S DR dual sport....it is going to have the same done to it....I'll snap some pics before I begin to tear it down.

These along with the 4 wheelers, JD Mule, and Rhinos....not to mention the Kubota and a wagon....should be able to run for a while until the fuel runs out.

What do you have in stores for extreme rationing of fuel?

One thing that I found about our stored mountain bikes is that if they are in a hot store unit the plastic and rubber degrades rapidly. I recommend extra tires, and tubes. Sounds like you got it squared away.

Yes....multiples....I get the pumps at every yard sale I see them at.....hit them with conditioning oil for the seals.

I dropped the cash on a tire dunk tank about a year ago when I got my tire changer...it came with a very nice plug and patch kit....all the tools for scuffing. I'm going to order a refill kit this fall....all the adhesives are still well within date.

I planned for the bikes to have only 2 different sizes of tires.....so we have a couple of each size tire....a couple extra rims....a couple spare tubes for each tire....a couple extra chains.....a chain repair kit....spoke replacement kit.....and a cable repair kit with 1/2 a spool of cable.

I bought a bike swivel stand at a estate sale for $25.00....so that's covered too.

All said....there are 9 bikes at the BOL.

My only gripe was the drum brakes.... Felt like they were made of wood.

LOL....that is about the best description for them I have ever heard.

The newer Suzuki has twin piston disc brakes.....when I took it for a run.....I about tossed myself over the handlebars...:)

I ran airless tires on a road bike for a number of years, while they are a tad more firm on uneven terrain, they lasted amazingly well. except when a friend borrowed my bike, and his kid was playing around trying to see how long of a black streak he could leave on the driveway when he hit the brakes. The rubber seemed softer than a normal tire, and wore off rather quickly. after I got it back, it felt like the back tire was a stop sign.

If the rubber is stiff softer, then one might be cautious on rough terrain, where it might get cut or torn.

Can you still get that can stuff that you 'inflate' a tire with? like an expanding foam?

I'd thought of dirt bikes, but have no experience with motorized two-wheeled vehicles, and with no doctors around, decided against it.
Maybe 4 wheelers someday, I've used those. Problem here in the city if vehicles were down, you'd be running a gauntlet anywhere you went with the noise they make.

I do have a bike, and plan a deck for the back. Also planning a trailer for it.

Nice stuff Echo! The wife and I were just talking about looking for some mountain bikes over the weekend. Gotta start looking at those ASAP. Sounds like you have a good supply of spares and tools for keeping them running. In the end, that will come in very handy.
I used to ride/race dirt bikes years ago. I traded my last one in 1978. I'm still pissed I did that. That's certianly something that would be well worth having. Can't wait to see more pics.

Not true....All the bikes I have found are either Trek or Dimondback....The most expensive one was still under $100...and the most sunk into one to make rideable was under $50.

Yard sales are your friend...:)

Horses make my wife happy, and my main job in life is to make my wife happy, so we have horses. Three of them.
We need to get a small buggy.

Elvolver, think I will just buy one that my DH can pull cause we aren't getting any big animals to raise to pull that.

But that is nice to have on hand just in case a stray cow comes by.

Anywhoo we are good on transportation in every aspect. tractors, wagons, carts, 4-wheelers, bikes, and most of all that can't be stolen is our feet. with boots on of course.

trust me, in a post-event era, if a stray cow comes by. . . he best end up in your freezer! :P
