I ordered a new tiller.

I LOVE the shovel.

I got a SOG 'hawk. Only because I traded for it. I really wanted a cold steel hawk, but for now, I'll settle for the SOG

Decided with the wife to use cloth diapers and a diaper service for our daughter. Reason being: less trash, more AMERICAN jobs, no midnight diaper runs, more natural, she will potty train quicker, and they are REUSABLE, so no dependence on diapers if/when SHTF :) And we will have 80 diapers on hand at any one time.
$18 a week seems like a damn good investment for a diaper service. :)

Talking to the wife about another huge ammo order next month. I am getting it while I can.

If you have carpet, invest some of the savings in a bis sell carpet cleaner. Lol

Ok, no ganging up on me guys!! I haven't had the time and now it's freezing cold again - I hate to shoot when it's cold (no lectures please). Maybe you guys should tell my DH to figure out some challenging targets for me to shoot at because I'm bored with what he keeps making me throw lead down at. I can hit whatever he has out there already so a girl needs some motivation!

After all this prepping for the last couple of years, I have finally gotten around to getting BOB's started for my clan. However, I've only managed to throw a bunch of stuff in a clothes basket with the idea to sort and pack in the near future. I did get everyone a backpack so there's really no excuse not to pack them. I don't know why I do so much prepping elsewhere but really dread doing the BOB's. Go figure!

I finally made a faraday cage last night. I wrapped foil and aluminum tape around a steel Stack-On pistol safe.

I tested my hawk on that same safe, btw, since I lost the keys. The hawk's spike popped it right open with little effort, and the locking mechanism is now mounted backwards so I can use the latch as a handle. It'll also work as a mounting point for a ground wire. I'll try to get pics up in the relevant thread soon.

But just in case you can't find it , just ask and we will help you in any way that we can. That is what this colony is all about, helping each other.

Ok folks, so heres a interesting thing. . . I scored a box of metallic/heavy duty/mylar style ziplock bags. Does anyone have any idea if these would be good to store batteries/electronics in in lieu of a faraday cage? When I say heavy duty, you literally have to cut them open with a knife they are that thick. No hand ripping possible. Im just wondering if something like this would work. Im going to try the phone signal trick with it later tonight to see what kind of reception it gets thru the bag. Any other ideas, comments?

My darling wife peeled away the cobwebs and told me where "she" found them. It was at an antique shop we believe in Fayetteville, TN. I want to say I payed $15 a piece. They only had 2, otherwise I would have bought more. If you folks see any of these types of boxes, GRAB THEM! They come in all shapes and sizes. Light grey in color. These have rubber padding and all, nice compartments fit cell phones, GPS, hand helds, laser range finder with bullet drop compensator, lenstatic compass, etc. I'll post the pic over on the Faraday cage as well. I meant to do this a while back Izzy but I was busy, now that I'm a bit crippled, I'm slappin the keys. So here Ya'll go.

It depends on the metal coating. If the coating is thin, like on the anti-static bags, then it probably wont offer much protection. They do make EMP bags with a thicker coating. To get the best chance of protection, double bag it.

We have a radio that is an emergency radio powered by solar energy, hand crank or standard AA batteries. The CC Solar Observer Radio is a powerful AM/FM radio complete with NOAA Weather Band. We use it some times just to listen to music while sitting around the campfire at night. We just sit it in the sun during the day and wind it up good. Lasts for hours.

Nothing too sexy, but I had the Girl-Truck, AKA the Rav4 serviced. 120k miles is a big one: oil change, tire rotation, tune up, EFI service, throttle body cleaning, alignment, check all the mounting bolts, 4wd system inspection, etc. In addition to being time, I've noticed my MPG slipping so I'm hoping this will boost it back up a bit.

I have a long trip coming up and I use my vehicle in my work quite a bit (even if it's only to get to the airport to fly somewhere else). Plus you never know when we might have to dash up/down the road. I like our cars to be ready to roll.

BRR on the other thread you mentioned wanting a power supply and mentioned Astron's. They are great PS's. I have 2 old RS-20s here at the house. I have started using a Alinco DVM-330 for my home station. We also bought one for the EmComm group. During events we operated at we would run a many as 3 radios and a TNC off of one. None of the radios were running full power. Here's a link.

DM-330MV/DM-330MVE Detail information (http://www.alinco.com/Products/DM330MVE/)

They are rated at 30amps, but actually put out closer to 32. The main selling point to me was that Alinco had built in a circuit to protect the equipment connected if the supply toasted. None of the low to mid price supplies have this, as I understand it.

I am working on a full ham, MLS, GMRS comms system to store in a faraday cage. I'll be putting a DVM-330 in it to power everything. Current prices are under $200 most places. I paid $179 a few years ago for mine. Heres one $10 better than that. Giga parts is a reputable dealer as well.

I hope it works better than the Solio I tried a few years ago. Couldn't pass it up for that price. Also paid off another big chunk of our credit card debt, added to our savings, and still working on the cleaning out the basement. Bought a lot of canned food this week. I don't think I will have to buy canned chili for years now, which can only mean that I will start to hate chili very soon.

Suffered a setback with selling my daughter's old clothes. Instead of buying silver or putting it in her savings, "we" have decided on pink cowgirl boots from Farm and Fleet. I have another batch of stuff to take to the shop, so maybe next time.

you (we) can post questions about some of the intricacies (sp) of gardening that some of the more experienced ones here can answer for us.

Take the cereal out of the box, with a permanent marker write the name on the bag, and store them in a clear tote Totes. They stack nice on each other. Since I dont drink coffee, I figured someone in the group will, or it can be used for trading purposes. And the hot chocolate, well, who doesnt like hot chocolate? The 4 boxes above the hot chocolate, each is 500 count single serving coffees, and Ive got 10 boxes of it. . . who wants to get their caffeine buzz on? Anyone? :)

I mentioned to my dad that I wanted to build a greenhouse and was thinking of checking the local Habitat Restore for old windows to use. Saturday he called me to tell me to come out to my aunts because she was cleaning out an old barn and I might find some things I could use. I scored 50 windows. They are great (90 yrs old glass with still in tact)and all for free!

When we replaced all the old single pane wooden windows from our house during the remodel we saved every one of them to do the exact thing. Guess we will be hauling them to the new property to build it there. Great find Carly!!!!!!!!! There are a lot of designs out there to build using them and other reclaimed materials.

Well, the retaining plate works! Still having some stovepipes... The extractor is cutting nice little chunks out of the rims on every case, and when it doesn't stovepipe, it's not releasing the case which basically causes it to ram the back of the chamber on the right side, so new extractor is on the way with my 922r parts on another build. Argh, I'm getting sick of fixing this ultra-reliable gun! Lol

Where did you get the lice comb? I haven't found one anywhere.
I am more than a bit embarrassed to admit this, but my daughter has come home from school with lice twice already this year. I think someone isn't treating their kid and keeps spreading it around. And of course, the first time she got it we couldn't do anything about it because it was during a snow storm. I can't describe how uncomfortable we were knowing that there were bugs in our hair and we had to just sit there. Now I keep an extra bottle of Natroba in the house. Ok, back to prepping. I lost so much in my garden to the frost and moles I have decided to take some seeds and put them in coffee filters (got a gazillion of them at Costco for cheap), wet it and added seeds, put them in a ziplock baggie. Magic is happening. I was able to plant 3 new cukes yesterday and hope that tomorrow I can put in the white cukes. I also figured out that sweet potatoes are grown by clipping those long things that grow out of it (NOT by cutting it apart like regular potatoes) and putting them in a jar of water. They have been in only a couple of days and the greenery is going crazy already!!!! I don't know if it's too late to plant them in the season but I'm gonna try.

What is a broken case extractor? and why the need for them?

Old or weak cases,or even due to overpressure will split or crack horizontally leaving the upper or lower portion of the case lodged in the breach. I have never had it happen on one of my personal guns but I have had to remove them from a few friends. Also one M2 Browning 50 cal machine gun in the Navy, that was confusing at first because I wasn't sure what happened. I ordered a barrel swap on the spot, thank God for training exercises and spare barrels right? Couldn't figure out what the new obstruction was and then in the light, I saw the lip of brass, it was way up in there. Never did find the lower half though.

OK bottom line, handy device, removes the broken case from your barrel. Consists of a drill bit, tap, and a widget to help you thread into and extract your case. Does that about some it up?

GunnerMax. I figured you for a CLP "Breakfree" guy not Hoppes.

yep. makes perfect sense. Although I have never had the need for one. It is certainly something to keep in mind when shooting mil-surp ammo.

would a 'tap' with the cleaning rod from the muzzle end not dislodge it too?

GunnerMax
05-03-2012, 02:00 PM
BR13, I am a Die Hard CLP guy. I have the aerosol spray CLP, and it is not my favorite, so I decided to pick up some Hoppes products to test them out. I am starting to get supplies to maintain my weapons for the long-term. I do not want to rely on my ability to go to the local gunshop to fix an extractor, or to make sure my guns have enough CLP.

My thing: You cannot ever have too much CLP.

@ sniper, yes it would do it, but what is quicker than putting a cartridge sized thing and let the bolt being pulled back do the work? :) I bet putting together a cleaning rod takes longer. Plus, some people have the boresnakes or cable pull-through rods, so they are useless.

The main point for me getting them, besides common sense for me, is that I use alot of Mil-surp ammo. I dont buy the "ferrari" ammo, I buy the "Ford Focus" ammo. Its not as nice, breaks alot, but gets you from point A to point B.

I also do not like stuffing things down a bore and trying to ram something out

Sniper-T

Thanks GM. I may have to keep an eye open for one just because. Both my sks's have the stock 1 pc rod on board, so fumbling isn't too worrysome.

I've got a couple thousand rounds of milsurp through each of them, and haven't seen a case failure yet. and I have a few thousand through each of my Toks (7.62X25) and haven't there either.

That said, I'm guessing that my next shot out of each will split. lol

Everything went in #10 cans with o2 absorbers, which makes managing waste and useage much easier, compared to 5 gallon or larger buckets, and barrels.

Got the grits from Honeyville Grain. Down home in L.A.(Lower Alabama) you go to Winn Dixie or Piggly Wiggly and they will have one whole aisle 100 feet long with nothing but Grits. 10 or 12 brands with multiple flavors not mention slow cook, guick cook, and instant. I think instant is still illegal in some counties though. Maybe a box or two of quaker oats and some Farina or Maypo.
Up here in New Yorkistan they have Yuppie food, a gazillion diff oat meal and a couple of grits.

What is an HVT raid Storm? Just curious.

High Value Target. Basically, we get the word that a "wanted" person is at a certain location, we get a target package with photo, description, known associates, people who may be with him like a security detail, family, ect ect, and then a layout of the area he will be in, houses, layout of the houses, ect ect. and then we get a time frame that they will be there, and so then we lay out a target package to apprehend or terminate, and then we practice it, practice, practice, practice, and then we execute the raid. What happened with Osama Bin Laden and ST-6 was considered a HVT Raid, same with any of the other high ranking knuckleheads out there that are still breathing air that shouldnt be.

I am focusing on medication this month, so I got the current edition of The Pill Book, I managed to "save up" for lack of a better term 2 extra months of my RA meds, some muscle relaxers, and a prescription for Tamiflu, and I bought a few odds and ends like extra Advil and tissue. Once I clean out the linen closet, I will have a better understanding of what I need but the basement takes priority. My mother's garage sale is next week end and I need to get my junk ready. Still paying on the two credit cards left and keeping balances off the other ones and adding to savings.

And I got a temp job! I don't expect it to pay more than a few hundred dollars, but every bit helps.

I picked up a complete set (White and Black) filters for my Berky water purifier at a good price. 3 gamma seal lids for 5 gallon buckets, some 5 gallon mylar bags at the expo yesterday.

Today went to the gun showand picked up a bunch of cleaning supplies, brushes, pics, CLP, patches, etc. Found a little tin (reminds me of an old snuff tin) with s kit for .308, minus the rod. Got that for $5 and figured It was worth that just to take apart for a mental exercise if nothing else. 2 Magpul mags for the AR, 50 .223 stripper clips. and a broken case extractor for .223.

My favorite thing for the trip though was a Palmetto stripped AR Lower. I guess you guys talking about your builds so much the bug finally bit me. So I got me another proxject to work on.

I've also been looking for a watch for a few years since my old Casio died. Got me a Casio G-Shock solar watch. I'll have to

any way cooked it in the crock pot and the meat was still dried out and chewy after about 5 hrs of cooking. taste wise it was good but the meat was to tough. Just still learning what to do.

Sounds like you had a hell of a week! Lucky guy!

Myself, nothing as far as prepping, but I am currently helping another guy get prepped, hes just starting out, but hes off and running with it at a damn good pace! He started with a rifle, now hes up to a couple of pistols and ammo, and hes working on food preps now! Its actually kind of exciting to mentor a person about prepping, didnt think I would enjoy it this much!

I am on the mailing (spam) list for MREDepot.com
They had a limited supply of surplus Govt Cheese powder they offered on first come/first served basis. Looks like they are all out now.
I got six cans and a couple of NBC/CBR suits. With shipping it was ~$125.
UPS delivered this morning. Will not open these for a while as I already had a can of the same stuff we use for mac-n-cheese.
Seems like the very same stuff that comes in the Kraft box, just a little lighter in color. a #10 will go a LONG ways.
I'd say 2 heaping tablespoons added to a cup(uncooked) macaroni with some butter and a little milk. Just enough for a meal for one, or a side dish to share with Wifey and the TAST.

Sniper,

Basically this: Keep flies away from the waste. Keep the waste covered. Wash your hands. Do not let waste get near your water source. Move locations frequently. There were MANY other ideas for latrines, urinals, etc that were all very primitive and that could be useful post-SHTF. Anyone: Shoot me an email if you want me to email you the manual in an attachment.

bacpacker ok got it here it is:

Watermelon Rind Pickles

4 quarts cubed watermelon rind
1 cup canning salt
1 gallon cold water
7 cups sugar
1/2 cup thinly sliced lemon (about 1 medium)
1 tablespoon whole cloves
1 tablespoon whole allspice
1/4 teaspoon mustard seed
3 sticks cinnamon
2 cups vinegar
2 cups water

Peel watermelon rind, removing green and pink portions. Cut rind into 1-inch pieces, dissolve salt in water;add rind and let it stand 6 hours or overnight. Drain;rinse. Cover rind with cold water in large saucepot. Cook until tender, about 20 minutes; drain; set aside. Tie spices in a spice bag. Combine sugar, lemon slices, spice bag, vinegar and 2 cups water in a large saucepot. Bring mixture to a boil and cook 10 minutes. Add rind, simmer until rind is transparent. Remove spice bag. Pack hot rind and liquid into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Remove air bubbles. Adjust two-piece caps. Process 10 minutes (adjusting for altitude it would be 20 minutes for Colorado) in a boiling water canner. Yield: about 6 pints.

I've spent most of this week working in the garden and starting to harvest our wheat crop. Still got a long way to go with that, but I'm learning tons as I go. That was the main goal in the first place. I had never worked with wheat before, and like I try to mention to anyone who is planning to grow any or all of their own food after TSHTF, if you have never gardened before or very little, you better get started. Growing food is not the easiest thing you can do, There are lots of critters, weather to deal with, planting seasons, fertilization, & many other issues to learn how to deal with. I've been gardening for more than 35 years and every year I learn something new.

Other issues to learn about, what varities of veggies do you like? Which one will grow in the zone you live in? What are the growing dates in your area? How fertile is the ground in your area? What minerals do you need? There is a lot of things to take into consideration and lots of learning to be done. If you have any type food growing plans for bad times, I would highly recommend getting started soon.

On topic: I ordered the irrigation system for my container garden, and put tomato transplants in my topsy turvy's.

Bp, good advice. I went out to the garden today to pick a squash and the Japanese beetles (or they may be June beetles) - not sure if the Japs start off small and grow, but either way, they are here now. They haven't started on the veggies yet but on the weeds so I "Sevened" everything in sight. I know they will be hitting the apple orchard soon so they will be destroyed. I am hoping they won't be a problem at the new property. Will not have such a huge orchard there for sure!

I have started to learn Morse Code

along with other things pertaining to my job (marine navigation)

Brushing up on my chartwork (nautical charts but very close to topographic, or as close as I can get)

Outstanding! Now you'll get stuck sending flashing light to the fleet, I dub thee "ship's signalman/quartermaster" to hell with that you need to be OOD! After you've mastered the helm. One must master the helm before one can be a ship handler.

Be safe.............the night is your friend.

The numbers are easy, as there is a pattern to those. But Damn Samuel Morse. There are no patterns to letters....

Got the wife a Blue Force Gear SOC belt. It's going to be her 1st line support system. Working on rigging it up now......review to follow of course....

I checked it out. The "Lady" and I both agreed it is a great system. "BZ" man! Now you got me lookin. Makes great sense, load bearing suspenders. Mollie up whatever you want, guns and gear. Unbuckle your belt and you don't have to worry about your shit fallen down if you gotta adjust your britches. Great score!

Be safe.............the night is your friend.

I finally ordered the worms for composting. It was supposed to be done in May, but I finally got around to it. Also started the paperwork to refinance our mortgage at 2.8% interest. I am a little worried about the appraisal because of the foreclosures, but we will see. It will free up a little extra a month toward our bills. Finally got to talk to our tent manufacturer and they are sending a new rain fly in time for our camping trip, and we are just going to patch the original so we have a spare.

I have also come to realize that I am not as organized as I thought I was. I can't find half of our camping stuff. I will have to clear out a corner of the basement just for camping storage.

Yeah, nothin ever comes easy, but you are a viable asset. Cross training is essential to the crew/team's survival. Someone can go down at any time for any reason. I'm a firm believer in "Everyone should try to know everyone's job" as much as possible, cross train!
So, former deck seaman eh? Then you know bridge "etiquette"? We learned that from the English ya know? Way too much micro management. (KISS) nuff said.

Not much just that the knife is a very large Indian spearhead, the small rock is agate ( a very nice size), The rock that I think looks like a bull is something that was used to maybe crush herbs. But they are not just rocks like some might have thought.

Hey twin...did you buy stevia plants or grow from seed? I have seed but I can't get them to grow. Funny that you are trying to do plants in water only because I posted last night about doing the exact same thing!! Our minds must be running together. Can you take some pics and post so I can see how you are setting it up and how it's going?

Just learned how to make bread from scratch! OMG! What a difference from store bought. Almost ate the whole loaf already. Yummy. I guess I can bake after all. Pizza last week, white bread this week...so what will it be next week? Maybe rye bread....hmmmm.
