It seems that hunting season is either upon us, or about to be. Who's all going out, and for what?

Deer and bear both open here on Monday, and since it is a holiday, I'll probably grab the bow and go for a walk and see what is moving around. migratory and upland birds will be opening in a couple weeks, so I'm also looking forward to that.

Anyone else?

We are still a ways off, deer doesn't open for us until the first weekend of November for rifle, and the last weekend of October for bow. Not sure about the migratory birdl seasons.

It's not hunting here....it's called waiting.

I got one of the harbor freight motion alarms out back near the orchard.....the herds are coming through around 7 in the eve....and leaving around dawn.

I know which 2 I want to harvest from here.

I'll go and nest on the hill above the exit route they have been following.....with my Hk93...If I'm lucky.....I'll get both the same morning.

Going to BOL to harvest 2 more with the bolt action Rem 700 .308.

Will grind most....jerk some....save the tender loins for breakfasts....yum.

If I get the smoker done.....??

I've been talking with Kodiak about getting out for deer when it opens. I wouldn't pass up a handful of squirrels for that matter.

October 1st opens bow season. I am off work so I will be out there. Were blessed with a season that lasts untill the end of december. November 15 shotgun opens. I am hoping for 2-3 deer this year. Ive been very blessed my last three years have yeilded 4 big bucks. Now for clarification I dont hunt just bucks. I have had all does every year untill the last three. We have just had an influx of big bucks, and if there was a bigger bodied doe infront of him shed be the dead one.

I'll take a doe over a buck most the time.....less it's a yearling I've been watching.

Heck....one of the best I've ever ate one of my buddies dropped off.....swear I had to wipe the milk off its lips.....

One of the bird seasons opened yesterday, no larger game for awhile yet.
I have a trip planned for the first week of Dec. Everything that walks, crawls, or creeps will be in season. If it moves, we can shoot it.
I'll be specifically after bear, and deer.
I hope to have pics when I return.

I don't feel like I'd be ready in time for the archery deer opener, so its the Nov. 15 gun season for me. I got invited to a new place this year that has me pretty excited.

Coyote trapping opens Oct. 15 iirc. I'll be prepping some footholds soon. This is the first year I've gotten an ok and a location to use them.

I'll be hunting squirrel this fall, and rabbits in the winter months. I'd still like to find and drop a feral pig, no license needed for that.

Good luck everyone.

Well, just spent Labor Day at my buddy's place in eastern KY (Georgetown area) for thier archery opener.
Between the full moon, temps in the mid 80's and the remnants of Hurricane Isaac the hunting was tough to say the least. We were rained on most of the weekend. I only saw one doe from the stand and it was on Monday morning. I had a 22 yard shot at her after watching her for almost 20 minutes from 75 yards out. I rushed the shot and sailed it over her back. She ran about 30 yards, stopped, looked around to see what just happened and then slowly walked out of my life. The arrow was solidly embedded into a stump behind where she stood.
I may have to change my name to "stump killer" as I blasted a stump last year shooting at a nice 8 pointer.
This was my first bow hunt after just getting back into it a couple of months ago after a long hiatus so I don't feel too bad about the miss.
Oh, and of course the day I am flying back home, my friends son's buddies shot a handful of 140-153" bucks, some in full velvet. Seems to be my luck, a day late and a dollar short.
The archery opener here in my area of FL opens next weekend so hopefully I can redeem myself.

Pointing out the obvious Onestep... but you know you have to aim low on an animal when you're in a tree stand, right??

Neighbour stopped by yesterday bearing the gift of a goose. He went out yesterday morning and got a bunch, so thoughtful guy that he is, he treated me to one.

:)

Probably roast it up on the weekend, as we'll have some family over

Nicely done Sniper.

Opening weekend for archery down here. Nothing Saturday morning/mid-day but had this spike visit Sunday evening.
Didn't have a perfect shot so he got a pass. Picture taken with flip phone so it's not real good. He was at 20 yards.

It appears that way from this picture. I'm about 16' up a tree that is on top of a little ridge so I'm probably closer to 18-19' up. Not the best phone either.

They flew off as soon as I opened the door, and by the time I got out from under the overhang where I could shoot, I only got one. But, an hour later, a couple more came back, and I got another. I'd like to get one more, and they'll make a nice dinner for Friday.

We have one that visits us and chases our 4 wheeled or our ankles if we get close to her part of the mountain. She has even flew up on the back of our 4 wheeler while we were leaving It was moving slow) after she peaked our feet to death.

She follows us to the cabin and talks to us at night. Don't think we could eat her but others are not safe.

Well, yesterday was very eventful for me.

Went to my buddies house for some family archery practice. I met the Mrs. there so we were in different vehicles.
Finished up about dark and headed home. It's a dark 2 lane country road we see lots of deer on regularly. about a mile from my friends house a car coming the other direction hits a deer as we are approaching each other and sends it accross my path and into the shoulder of the road. I lock em up and pull over as I see it get hit right in front of me. Thank God they didn't swerve into my lane to miss it.
Back up to it and its a small buck and dead as a door nail. The driver turns around and comes back to the scene. I ask him if he wants the deer, he says no, so I call my buddy to come over and get it. While I am waiting on him the wife pulls up wondering what happened. She states she forgot her phone and was heading back to his house to get it. She leaves, he pulls up, hands me her phone and we proceed to load it into his truck and he is off the take care of it.
I get back on the road, running about 45-50 (speed limit). About a half mile down the road, I all of a sudden see a deer in the middle of the road. Another car is coming the opposite direction as I am slowing down but the deer bolts right as I am there and crashes into the tahoe drivers door.
I'm like WTF just happened. The other car kept going, but I pull over.
The doe looks like she broke her heck and is still breathing. I call my buddy to tell him what happened, he's says "you're kidding right, no I'm not" I reply. He says I'll drop the first one off and head your way. In the meantime, the wife eventually drive by, pulls over and of course asks what happened. I explain I hit a deer (at the time I thought I hit it with the brush guard as I didn't see where it actually hit and hadn't looked at the door yet).
She's not believing this but neither am I. She heads to the house for a drink.
My buddy pulls up, we put her out of her misery, he loads up and heads home to take care of them. I offer to come help but he said he would field dress them & ice down that night and do the rest the following day.
So we have (2) deer between us in the freezer and haven't fired a shot yet.
Hopefully the dent in the door can be pulled out without much trouble.

Do you carry a knife? when at all possible, roadkill should be bled ASAP

Onestep
09-20-2012, 05:22 PM
Sniper, I'd much rather put an arrow or bullet in one.
Both were in excellent shape as this only happened 5 minutes apart. They we taken care of faster than you would from a shot.
And yes, I used the old Benchmark to relief her misery.

Those grouse are so cool Sniper. How many you need for a meal?
Skattergun or precision head shots?

Sniper-T
09-21-2012, 02:09 PM
All my meals, I cook for 4. dinner for the wife and I and leftovers for lunches the next day.

I am plannig on crockpotting the first batch with mushrooms, onions, celery, etc... in a white wine/cream sauce. so for that I'll probably do up 4. I'll serve it over fresh pasta (probably fettuccini).

I basically shoot them with whatever I happen to have handy. So if I see them by the back, I'll grab a .22. if they are in the front, a 12 Ga, upstairs, a 20 Ga, and garage a 12 Ga.

If I am going out hunting them, I almost exclusively take a .22

Onestep

Had some fresh bear sign in my yard yesterday morning, So I grabbed a .30-.30 and went for a walk. I tracked him about a 1/2 mile back, and it looked like he was on a mission heading dead away from me at a good clip. lol

So as I meandered back towards the house, I snuck up on a nice spike horn buck. I figured he'd do better hanging in my garage than fighing bigger bucks for some lovin' so he bacame the first sacrifice to my freezer for the year.

Possom
11-08-2012, 10:59 AM
It tastes a whole lot like beef. A little dry. If u want to make burger or sausage with it you are ahead to mix a little pork fat with it to get some grease in it to hold it together. As for steaks and roast you cook them just like you do a beef.

Just got back from my trip, and photo's are sketchy, as I didn't get shots of my deer with my own camera, so I gotta try to get shots from the other guy(s)

This was my first kill of the week. This bugger moved in under the shed, chased the cat out, and took over eating the cats food too. Even though that is the most annoying sounding cat I've ever heard, he is an awesome mouser so he stays, and this guy went:

Although this side looks good, it was shot to hell. When I saw him the closest thing I had handy was a .30-.30, which went in right beside the head (front right shoulder), and came out the back of the left rear leg, dumping all it's guts, and scent sack into a puddle that it sat in for a while. I wanted to skin it and stuff it full of grass to put in my buddy's sleeping bag, but I could hardly hold my breath long enough to toss it into the truck.

One of the adventures:
http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/1112121714a.jpg

That was just before dusk when we broke through and sunk my buddy's truck in a slough. We farted around for a couple hours, then left it until the next day:

Later that day, my buddy took a poke at a running doe, and hit it, but it kept going and got into a bush before he could get a second shot off. We left it for a while, and then I went in to track it. It had laid down not far inside the bush, but jumped up when I pushed through the jumble at the edge. The whole bush was full of tracks, and beds... like EVERYWHERE! she laid down in an old bed:

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/1113121353a.jpg

and in over 20 minutes only lost that much blood. Not a good sign.

I started stalking quietly, take a step, stop look listen, wait... She wasn't leaving much for a trail:

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/1113121357a.jpg

but I was persistant. I caught sight of her almost a dozen times before I could get the gun up, and even though the bush wasn't that heavy, there was a lot of underbrush:

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/1113121410a.jpg

Which, of course, makes a clear shot difficult. when I finally thought I had a clear kill shot, through the branches at about 20 feet, I lined up right below the base of her ear and squeezed off the shot. A sapling about 8' in front of me leaned over drunkenly, my bullet cutting it halfway in two. But the doe jumped like she was hit again, so I waited a few minutes and then started working up quietly. I hit her. from standing broadside, with only a sliver of her head presenting, that bullet deflected enough to catch her square in the sternum, and dump her vital organs out through a 3 inch hole in her chest. She made it 2 steps from where I hit her.

I think that any guy who has 'written their name' in the snow, knows not to eat the yellow stuff (and a few talented ladies - ;) )

A couple buddies are still out there, and I'm joining them again today for the weekend. I might be able to get a couple shots of the hanging deer, but it'll be a week+ before they're back with their cameras.

I saw this out hunting, and I'm happy I got the pic because my camera is only thing I "shot" today. Just thought it was a pretty cool one.

I haven't seen or even heard a deer for days, so I carried some #6 out this morning instead of my camera. 30 minutes later...

Its a start.

Updated: I had a repeat this afternoon.

I could have gotten one more gray one, but it was requested I only target the black phase due to a disparity in the numbers between the two.

I'm happy I didn't come out empty handed today, but... <sigh> its still not a deer.

All very nice, makes me more anxious.
However, I leave Saturday, will be in camp that evening. Hunting is illegal on Sundays here, so I'll mess around camp, maybe do some scouting, get settled into the woods from living in the city.
Got from Monday 'till Saturday before I pack up Sunday to come home.
Mainly after a black bear, but deer won't be safe. Squirrels for the camp pot, maybe fresh deer too. It'll all be in season.
My friend is a bushcraft instructor, so I will learn plenty. We plan on tanning the hides in camp.
Gear's mostly packed. I will take two cameras, my regular one and a waterproof one.

This promises to be a really good time.

My first year bow hunting and I am now 0 for 6 on does. Shot over the first one and all the rest have been low. Think I overcompansated after the first shoot over but think the rest were me "peeking" and dropping my bow after the shot. Actually missed the same doe 3 times on 2 different hunts. Guess it wasn't her year to die.
Still have a month and half yet to redeem myself, will keep you posted.

Funny you say that Sniper. From the practice tree stand in the back yard, I put all arrows dead center in the kill zone from 12 to 26 yards. I also shoot a few times a week from standing, sitting and from the tree.
The misses were at 14 and 24 yards.
I know some of it is deer fever and suspect I'm either dropping at the shot or not bending at the hips properly.
Better to get the bugs worked out before that big boy shows up.

Whats happening is your arrow tip needs a dab of spit from your left finger (if right handed) for honing so it can find it's target. Try it. (wink)

I bet you are using the wrong pin in the excitement of things. I know that is what I was doing for a while when I started. I would use what ever pin I saw first, now I have taken the extra step of double checking the pin I am using.

Onestep
11-28-2012, 04:22 PM
Helo, single pin sight (pendulum) so that's not the problem. I hold dead on with it from 10-30 yards and it hits where I aim.
I really think I've been not following thru after the shot and dropping slightly resulting in a low shot.
That along with "da fever" is what I think is causing it.
Thanks for all the input guys.

Sniper-T

Are you seeing a lot of animals when you are out? An easy way to get through the fever is to draw and aim at everything that moves. even if it is a fawn, squirrel, crow, or Liberal. hold the pin on it as it is moving, and then let off when you have to. do that nice and quiet, and you may not even frighten the animal away.

Something else to consider, is if the arrow is going to where you aimed, or is it low of your aim. If you or your bow make a bunch of noise as you release, deer have been known to duck or jump an arrow. could this be a consideration?

Onestep
11-28-2012, 04:57 PM
Sniper, might try that especially on a Liberal
I would think if they were ducking the shot they'd be dead now.

Here's the practice shots from 12 and 26 yards and from elevated stand respectively (note arrows look horizontal but its the picture angle):

Sniper-T

sometimes they duck... sometimes they jump.

If that is where you're aiming then your marksmanship is good, but depending on how high your stand is, you'll definately be tracking an animal for a while. Shooting from above, you should be trying for a spot above where the vital area shown is. That pop out section is for shooting from the ground. From above, you will likely pierce one lung very low (if at all, and miss most other organs as your arrow goes out the bottom of the deer.

and yeah... the angles in those pics look really messed up!
lol

Onestep
11-28-2012, 05:50 PM
The pic angles are messed up aren't they.
I know it looks like it is just in the pop out section but because of the actual angle, the arrows were thru it and in the main foam part of the target below the pop out on the opposite side. I'll take these shots all day long as compared to below the deer lol

Onestep
11-30-2012, 12:35 PM
Helo, from the ground yes and they fly perfect. I haven't tried the broadheads from the elevated stand yet but my thinking (which could be flawed) was if they fly perfect on the ground, they should fly the same from the stand. Plus I wouldn't tear up my 3D target as quickly using field tips.

Sniper-T
11-30-2012, 12:45 PM
you gotta do something to break the fever!

Try this:
Forget about deer hunting, shy passive animals pose no encouragement for you to control your breathing and shot. Take up hunting BEARS, or COUGARS!. With the thought of a couple hundred pounds of snarl climbing your tree stand to ask about that triangular ear piercing you just gave it should be the incentive you need to make your shot true!

;)

Here's my fiancées fathers deer he got on his first hunt in 2 years. He's been dealing with kidney issues and a transplant. Shot it on the run and it went 15 yards.

Here's mine shot at 20 yards. Her stumbled about 10 yards and fell over dead. It's an old 6 point. The leg blood is the exit wound. Blew his lungs, aorta, and vena cava to bits. There were actually spurts of blood out the wound.

Then the angle should not matter, the fixed broad heads I was using did not fly anything like field points. Since then I have switched to the rage and the fly exactly like field points. Could your bow be hitting something from your deer stand, ie the bottom of it hitting part of the stand, branch?

How does one pin work? I know you said it was a pendulum sight, but that only takes in account the height you are shooting at, how do you account for different distances?

Onestep
11-30-2012, 05:34 PM
Helo, in the one stand (3 misses) I'm pretty sure I didn't hit anything but I can't be 100% positive. There are branches around me that I have to draw between so maybe. The other miss had not obstacles in the way but the yardage may have been a little more than I had ranged and that miss was the first since sending one over the back of another in KY. I may have just overcompensated on that one.
Now I did miss another one on the same hunt as the 2 misses but I didn't count it as my bow's lower limb did hit the top of my climber and sent the arrow astray.

The pendulum I'm using is a TruGlo (can't remember the name right now). It is a single pin slider. When the site is locked, it works like the HHA sites where your yardage is marked and you loosen the lock knob and slide/adjust to your yardage. It's dead on out to 40 yards (haven't attempted longer yet).
When using the pendulum, it is "unlocked" and set at a specific yardage (mine is at 20 yards) and from 10-35 yards, it compensates somehow (don't ask me how but it works). You just hold dead on between those yardages.

Man I don't know, but I am with sniper. I don't see how it can know the distance. And I know if I use my 20 yard pin on a deer at 35 yards I am going to miss. Heck probably even miss at 30 yards.

Are you saying that without making any adjustments YOU have checked and your arrows are all going in the bullseye from 10 to 35 yards, or are you just going by what they say on the package? I just don't see how it is possible.

Onestep
11-30-2012, 07:11 PM
I don't either but it seems to works.
The 3D shots above are at 12 and 26 yards, with the pendulum loose, holding dead center both times.
I haven't tried it out to 30 or 35 yards yet.

I e heard of sights like this. I have an old pendulum that I set manually for range. However I've heard of sights that you set at a certain range and depending on the distance it's supposed to be accurate. Kinda like a BDC recticle. However I think it works on how you angle the bow when u aim at deer farther away.

Well, went on the trip, left the 2nd (Sat), supposed to return on the 9th (following Sun).
Ended up coming back Thursday. Pretty much a total bust, saw nothing but some squirrels frolicking while I held a .308. When I returned to the "playground" with a shotgun, they were nowhere to be found.
Really, probably comes down to two things. First, the weather made a big change right before arrival, and then again a couple days in. Another big change was to happen the day after I left. Second, there's a bunch of dogs that have free run of the property, but apparently mostly stay near the house. Since we had this big camp thing going on down in the woods, they were hanging out down there, following us around, etc.
No game. Never fired a shot.
Got a couple pics of the camp, soon as I get everything unpacked and the pics downloaded, I'll post 'em.
