Watch this.

It is from a fantastic tv documentary made in 1978. The series is/was called "CONNECTONS." It starts with explaining the east coast electricity blackout of 1965, how it happened, and what happened. James Burke, the narrator presents the REALITY of what would happen regarding personal survival, in such a situation, if the electricity were off permanently.

Also, the series is incredibly interesting because of Burke's explaining of how ever bit of today's technology derives from other previous technologies, going back to the beginning of Mankind.

I watched that, along with about the next 5 episodes. Pretty interesting. Probably watch more, just seen enough for one day, 6hrs worth.

Only thing I didn't like is he "credits" the Arab Muslims with all this good technology, which kinda puts a spin on it. That "kalif" as I remember, was one of the earliest radical Muslims, and was on a path of world domination, murdering and raping his way across much of the continent, taking everything that looked useful in his path. When he got sick, several of his highest disciples continued his "work", for centuries. It was the spread of Islam throughout the area, by conquering and subjugating or killing everyone in their path.

While even the bad parts of history sometimes leave some good things behind, he definitely leaves a much more pleasant spin on it than there really was.
This is also not to say that other religions haven't done bad things throughout history.
