Located in a small village at the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland, the Safe house was designed by architectural firm KWK Promes with the aim to provide its residents a feeling of maximum security.

Completed in 2009, the two story concrete monolith residence offers approximately 6,100 square feet of spacious living areas, floor to ceiling windows, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and a beautiful indoor swimming pool.

If I ever win the lottery, this guys are building me 2 of these.

where do you get one of those? I mean really, who builds stuff like that?

RedJohn

This one exists in Poland. I guess that you just have to pay to get one like that.

Seems to me exposed hinges on those shutter are a weak point as far as a forced entry situation. Damn big hinges though!

Actually, the structure itself may not be as expensive as you think. If it was formed and and the concrete placed monolithically (no cold joints) it could well be done cheaper than a stick frame construction. There looks to be about 500 cubic yards in the entire house, pool and garage. At contractor pricing here in the PRK (ready mix prices are in the toilet) 500 yards at $75/yd make the materials cost $37500 for concrete, probably an additional $7500 for rebar properly spaced, and about $50000 for labor, you have the rough structure for less than $100K. You'd have to act as your own general contractor and you'd have to do your own tenant finish (plumbing, wiring, flooring, trim , fixtures, etc) which would add probably another $100K-$150K. This project could probably be completed for less than $300K. All we need now are the plans and front money.;)

Super nice! I want an underground home, but I think I could be convinced to go with that. The roll up doors and concrete shutters are fantastic. I would be a little concerned with the shutters protection factor. A car or something could ram thru that. The lap pool is very nice and a good source of exercise.
Weather sure would affect you if you don't build it in New Orleans.

O wnder what the radiation PF is on that sucker... the walls look to be about 1-2 feet thick.. looks real nice though...

It's be a damn site better than stick built for sure. Not what you'd with an underground and concrete, but not bad. If it has a basement, and I bet it does, it would have a great PF.

I would be concerned that a house like this would be a huge target. People would wonder what you are hiding behind those walls. I would prefer to stay under the radar and blend in with everyone else as much as possible.

As long as they cannot get in. Plus, I would not build this in or near a city.

PF?
I saw this house before. It may withstand zombies but, not an angry mob IMO. (Again, the roll shutter) But hey, it's worlds better than my house. I sure hope the power doesn't go out or, hope you have a heckuva backup gennie. Those window slabs look awfully heavy.

Protection factor. It is a measure of how much reduction from a given amount of radiation a particular substance, concrete in this instance, would offer. I'll search around and see if I can locate some info and hopefully a link on the subject. Probably be later tonight or tomorrow.

I think this place is a <come and get me posterchild> it looks like it just advertises that you have something you don't want to give up.

You guys seems to be worried about getting people's attention because of the design. So how about this one:

Other than delta force or a team of rangers I think you'v be safe there. Assuming you didn't sleepwalk over the edge.
Fantastic views btw. From the looks must be in the alps or pyerennes?

RedJohn

I would say Alps as it looks a little Italian, assuming that it is not a fake picture ... of course.

Wouldn't work for me. I think my dog would chase his ball right over the cliff. Hmmm.... I wonder if I could attach a parachute to him that I could remotely open?

And, what happens when you run out of supplies?

RedJohn

It looks big enough for a fairly big garden and a few chickens and rabbits. What else do you need?

bacpacker
06-08-2011, 08:20 PM
Rabbits and Chickens would work well if fenced in. It looks big enought to have a decent garden, but I'll put money on it that what soil they do have, if any, is very poor and lacking heavily in minerals. You'd almost certainly be better off doing hydroponics, or aquaponics. your returns would improve greatly.

You're killing me. :) I guess we'll have to chose a feature that we'll have to work on. I revert to the first house and I'll provide the little armed security that you think the shutter is lacking. :)

That first house may say there something in there, but it also says : don't fuck with me!

I disagree with the 'attracts attention' sentiment. The rule of thumb is;if you look like food, you will attract the hungry. If you look like trouble, the smart stay clear!
I tend to think of myself as somebody with audacious resources and means for getting whatever I please in the inevitable shit/future,And I personnally would take a pass on a structure like that unless my life depended on taking it. in short... I would give those residents a pass.

I agree about passing on a place that looks defensable for easier pickings, but there are always those who will test their limits and yours.

i am still interested to see how long it would take to button up and the toss of a dime
If my eyes dont deceive me i see some sort of cantelever wall on the bottom part. I would assume its motorized

Either way, I'm willing to bet it would lock down way faster than I could harden my traditional stick built structure, even if I had all of the raw materials on hand to do it. Still a valid point though. The owner of that place would definitely need to know the weak points in the design and have a plan in place to cover them while in motion. I can think of a few people on this board who would likely do that automatically.
