View Full Version : Some preppers never learn

Well...some of us just never seem to learn.
Domegal, myself, daughter, and son.in.law are heading down to Florida on Saturday, and then getting on a
Carnival cruise ship and heading to the Bahamas for 4-5 days. Sound familiar?
We will be leaving the ship at least 3 times that I know of. I will not be able to have my CCW, or even a pocket knife.
I know the brain trust here can come up with some way to help me be able to keep my family safe.
Also, what do you think I should pack, just in case we get a repeat of the last famous Carnival BBQ cruise?
Ideas can't be too expensive, and mostly ready at hand, from an average household.

You can take a straight razor....just have the wife carry the ones you will really use.....don't forget the accessories for show.

or a safety razor and a cool little handle....

A roll of duct tape.

A few large HD garbage bags, 30 gallon.

Newspaper.

The aforementioned steak knife/composite knife.

Hopefully your suitcases are hard shelled type and not soft.

You can add weight in a rolled up newspaper and then tape it up. Good defensive/offensive weapon.

Knife taped to a broom stick would make a spear of sorts.

The garbage bags can be aired up easily with a breeze offshore and then knot the ends and tape together for emc floats.

Hard shelled suit case could be broken down as a shield of sorts.

Hard shelled suitcase could have edges taped and then wrapped a few times with tape to make a float.

If suitcases are soft type, a garbage bag could be inserted and used as a float.

Just some thoughts.

Jimmy

A broom handle with a knife taped to it for a spear.

You mean that they pat you down or make you go in an x-ray machine??

You can take a knife less than 4 inches on the boat. It should stay there of your going to Mexico. Otherwise check you ports of call and check their knife laws.

Do not sneak a blade on they will confiscate it. I walked right to the check in line with my 3.5 inch and small back up and showed it to them. Walked right on the boat no questions. Then you have a knife on the boat.

In port if the knives are allowed you won't have any issues getting on and off the boat. If knives aren't allowed take a steak knife from dinner and carry it off. Trash it before you go back on.

Check the other thread I made a list of what I brought with me. No issues what so ever.

All luggage and carrying are x-rayed, us meat bags go in a metal detector.

I would like to thank everyone for all the great advise. I ended up bringing along 3 large trash bags, dental floss, paracord, a 3 1/2 inch pocket knife, 2 flashlights, 2 solar charger, 3days supply freeze dried food for 2, and a few other things. I put the pocket knife and multi-tool in the bowl as I went through the metal detector, and had no problems with them. The security however DID have a problem with the live .22 round they found wedged in between the bottom of the bag liner and the bottom of the bag. Lets just say I got to know the security people in the Port Canaveral terminal really well, and I highly reccomend the body cavity search! They did understand the bag was my old shooting bag I was using it as my carry on luggage, and it was just a simple mistake. What really worries me about this though was the fact I emptied the bag, and also turned it upside down and gave it a good shaking before I used the same bag when my wife and I flew from Huntsville AL, to Atlanta, and then to Rochester NY and back 2 months ago. And guess what happened folks...yep, nothing. No one caught it on the scanner.

Id like to add... a few 2 or 5 liter water blisters, or bags... Folded up nice in your suit case. Id have enough for 20 liters of water. As soon as you get in your room, fill your bags. No need to clorox them, just 5 days wont be enough time for algae or bacteria.

Also, get a Nasonex nose spray bottle... empty it out and fill it with bleach/clorox... It only takes 6 drops per gallon to sterilize water, so in a nose spray bottle Id say theres enough to clean about 50 or more gallons.

A good size hank of 550 cord, might need to tie something down, or up... or something.

Flashlight that uses AA batteries and a few spares.

FAK, small enough to fit in a small camera bag... no sharps, just band aids, neosporne, etc.. Make sure you have 2 or 3 steri strips.

A pair of mechanic's gloves. Maybe need to do some work, or protect your hands.

If it were me, Id also have an MFJ 12watt 40M radio with 10 feet of coax and a resonant dipole, plus a AGM battery to run it on... if they let you take it on the ship that is... If SHTF on the ship, you can at least get comms in and out, or call mayday.. in which case, a Garmin GPS might be handy to communicate your co-ordinates.

If you take scrip meds, make sure you take 2 weeks worth with you.

Id say, a Ruger .44 mag, but doubt that will make it on ship, but damn if I sure would like to have it...

Keep in mind that the FCC regs for your HAM license require that you get the master of the ship's permission to transmit while on-board his/her vessel. Not that it isn't an excellent idea, just that you want to stay legal.

[QUOTE= Hope the Domeguy & family are ok![/QUOTE]

I was thinking that same thing when I read about how many ships are going belly up. Anyone who is planning a cruise I hope they mean cruising down the highway.

Thanks for asking, and we are home safe. Our ship, (Sensation) did not break down. the only problem we had with the entire cruise was the water in the bathroom smelled like a sewer. All the ship workers were always cleaning something, and were very nice. We had a good time, except for the 40 knot winds hitting the ship. My son-in-law and I tried to play miniature golf on the upper deck, but the ball kept blowing away.

We leave for our cruise in 3 weeks....I think we're gonna take Izzy's Survival Tabs with us and buy him a new bottle when we get back!!!!! Sorry brother. I hope I don't puke the whole time. Gonna hit the food bar as soon as we are able and grab all things non perishable and take it back to the room just in case. We can always pack it in our suitcases when we leave the boat and save on the food bill while staying at the hotel.

Have fun and be careful. If you haven't thought of it yet, take a inflatable toilet seat ring with you for a floating device
