They make good projectiles when left under the tire of a stuck wheeling rig.

Turn sod for a garden, dig a latrine, bury your silver cache, fire fighting, scrape out a trail, throw at a stump, bonk a rattler, move a pile/hole from here to there, lean on while watching some other schmuck work, spread manure, load a pickup with gravel, fill potholes, chop roots (sharpen edges first), use as lever to pry up edge of heavy things, dispose of Pelosi..,

Improvised weapon

Slip one or two into a nylon sack for (very) low grade puncture/shrapnel protection (not ballistic!) Break off handle, point the tip of the spade down, hold up to chest...the curve of the spade conforms to body.

Use spade as cooking surface

Scrape off the paint and use as reflector for signaling. Potentially use as reflector for cooking?

Collector of dew. Use curve of spade to direct into a collection device.

Use as a really crappy funnel.

Take some electrical tape, or a sharpie, and measure and mark the handle. I like to mark off every 6". It seems like often when I am using a shovel, I am also needing a tape measure.

This idea works good on rake handles too, especially in the garden, when you are planting and measuring distance between plants.
