I believe it to be a Czech M10M (http://www.amazon.com/Military-Surplus-Czech-M10M-Mask/dp/B00447KBK4), and I've read some about them. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with them. The chemical plant thread got me thinking, and I remembered I had this mask stashed away so I pulled it out for a look. I'm sure the filters are toast, and I can't find the spare ones I had.

Should I get new filters for it, or should I be looking at a new mask?

New mask.

the M10 mask is an old mask. Its only rated for tear gas, and thats wishful thinking.

What Izzy said.....

I have one of them...and it doesn't filter much.

With a test swab....you could smell the swab with new filters.

MASK: Russian/German M-10-M Protective Mask
STATUS: INEFFECTIVE 100% obsolete
DETAILS: Very old model. This type of protective mask should NEVER be used for protecting against any NBC warfare agents.
USAGE: Designed ONLY for protection against tear-gas.
(These will most likely not provide this protection as they
are ALL more than 20 years expired)

Thanks guys, I figured it was junk but I'm glad to know for sure.

That's a great link Izzy.

From the gas mask sticky:

I'm currently working on a list of masks that I would actually recommend. I'll get it posted up asap.

Did you ever make the list? I would definitely be interested in your recommendations.

The current Israeli military model is a decent bang for the buck.....if it is of newer manufacture.

http://www.armynavysales.com/assets/item/regular/DSCN99693.JPG

They will accept standard NATO 40mm filters.

One drawback....they are "one size fits most adults".....so the fit can be an issue depending on your melon.

They do meet most specs....and the new manufacture ones are made from a better compound....that's a bit easier to make a seal.

If you locate a M-40A1 current USGI model...they are pretty nice....fit as well as one can expect....decent FOV....can be expensive though.

This is mine....

I found another....and it is being shipped in the morning....should be here by the 6th....:)

Izzy like always good information.

If you look at the ones which are approved, most of them are expensive. If you have a mask on the list to have I highly recommend you buy a newer model that will be around for a while. I prefer the MSA because of work and I am familiar with it. That is the big thing use what you are familiar in other words you need to practice. If you have an old mask that is obsolete then use it for practice or a good dust mask. However you need to periodically check your mask for serviceability. Remember your canisters have to be replaced periodically when you are using them so if you can afford it purchase an extra or more.

Depending upon what you anticipate you might want to consider other equipment than just a mask. If you are concerned about absorption you need to consider a suit to protect you from the ickies. Commercial suits do not take into consideration for tactical operations. Lanx suits work very well although like all these types of suits they are hot.

you guys want me to post a thread with the masks that will give you the mist mileage without offering up the firstborn?

The M-17 inserts can be bent to fit many other models....and from what I have heard....will fit a M-40....

They are cheap...

Regarding prescription inserts if you go with MSA they offer them. There are some lens you mount in a rubber like pair of glasses you wear under military gas mask. These do not work well. I have had a couple and could never get a good seal even though I was assured they would work.

One other option is get some stick on lens they make for scuba divers' mask. I was going to go to these for a different application from the masks but it was solved so I never got to try theses.

I bought a pair of these frames MANY MANY MOONS AGO, they work GREAT! You can wear them without a mask as you would any other glassess, and when its time to don the mask, you dont have to take them off and swap inserts, or anything else... the mask fits perfect without a loss of seal.

However... for me, the expensive part happens to be the LENS! I have terrible eyes and my prescriptions are quite costly...

Those are the same type and location that I got mine. I guess my square head interferes with the seal............
