Will more than likely never see him, but will try. My place is very thick and hard to hunt. There are some huge deer here, but rarely are they killed. Those old bucks disappear during hunting season.

Because they are ghosts. I swear to to the lord, I have watched the biguns for weeks until hunting season. Opening day, hell no, never see them again. Until next off season. Where I hunt is rough too, but the big guys know when to go undercover.

personally, I'd leave him be and take a couple of the smaller ones. Much better eating, and I don't give a shit about the horns.

They look well fed, should be a good season. Damn, now I'm getting hungry...

It isn't just about horns, it is about the health of the herd. The older ones need to be taken out, so the younger ones can have more resources. It is also about the challenge. Shooting a young deer is easy, getting a chance to see a mature buck in this area is rare. Most people hunt their entire lives and never see a 5-6 year old buck. If the meat is prepared right, I don't notice the difference between a older deer and a younger deer. Heck I have killed some hogs that went close to 300 lbs and the meat was wonderful. I let the meat sit in a ice chest (but away from the water and ice) for over a week. Since I started doing this all the meat is tender and much better.

lol. there is a regional difference for sure. you put it in an ice chest, I just let the meat hang in my garage, sometimes adding a heater so it doesn't freeze. lol

My school of thought is that the old buck probably fertalizes a hundred or more does. get rid of him, and the younger ones are too busy fighting and too small to interest a mature doe. On my property I have two mature bucks, which I ignore, and each year I am rewarded with a dozen new ones running around. leave the little ones, take the mediums, and leave the oldies. I like shooting 3 yr olds. I shot a lot of big bucks in my day, and don't need the hassle, for me (personally), they're not worth it.

For you... if that's what you're going for, and want... then you know I'm rootin' for ya, and hoping you succeed. Go get him pal!

We have deer down here in Tennessee at the local state park that know the invisible boundary line of the park. You can see them right on the edge, but seem to know during hunting season, it's safe where they stand, and not one foot more.
