There is supposed to be a new show on Nat Geo later this month called American Blackout. I tried to set it up on the DVR but it didn't show up, so it may not be on. But this link has some interesting info about the show and their take on how things would go.

laughing really hard... "Hopper ho's" i don't have a DVR, no need for 1, wouldn;t know how to set it and couldn't set the VCR when it was in fashion. besides, The Walking Dead is on the same time. but on the other hand, TWD will be shown later in the evening. it did/does sound interesting.

I don't have natgeo on my cable plan but I know I could acquire this episode from other sources.

This is a real plausible shtf scenario in my opinion and I really want to see this!

Anyone want to take bets if the grid went down for a month or a emp hit, that the city of New York would be eating each other in 7 days?

I would take that bet. I fell the good citizens of our great city of New York would proudly stand together, and unite as one, and work together, to come up with a solution realizing the good of the many out weighs the good of the good of the few...or the one.
I would only give them three days before all hell would break loose.

I think they would have a real hard time getting a 16oz. soda, but! They will have plenty of handguns to pass around for the general public. they will be used for trading of course.

From the posts I'm reading they could be used for water..............

Nationwide grid outage (cyber attack)
Follows different kinds of people via their cellphone video diaries during the outage
Lots of unrest, government steps in, still lots of unrest, people dropping like flies, freaking out, government asked for help from foreign countries to fix grid/feed people. Widespread panic, more panic, violence, lots of crying, more panic/violence. The grid, decimated by the attack is restored in 2 weeks, everyone lives happily ever after.

The end.

well, shit! then what the hell are we prepping for? 2 weeks? I have enough food and water for that in my truck. Now I can sell off everything else I have and finally buy that 200" tv.

yeah. i didn't want to do a review and "spoil" the "nothing too miss"

really wasn't that much to it. it was funny and i laughed a lot. some folks are really better off as "sheeple".

if i had it to do all over again? i would have watched The Walking Dead and The Talking Dead. better way to spend 2 hrs. IMO

I was ticked that I canceled two other shows to record this. It totally glossed over a lot of the problems and gave no new ideas or scenarios. I felt like it was made to show young school children and not the general public.

I found the initial premise believable: cyber-terrorist take out the grid by hacking into systems and overloading the grid. My sister used to work for Westinghouse building software to control power distribution and such, and from her I know that if you get in, you can do bad things.
The (unfortunate) message I got form this show was the GOV will come and save you, if you can hold out for 2 weeks. Just listen and follow their directions. The nice food camps, the "foreign" aid coming in. Only 2 weeks to get power back after transformers blow from voltage surges on a national level?

Any comments on the “prepper” guy? In some ways I found him the most flawed and believable at the same time. He was a good example of you can't go it alone. He had too much stuff to defend by himself, without much support from his family and the loser boyfriend of his daughter. What good does it do to store 2 years of food it you are alone and unable to secure.
Just my opinion, but he would have been better off meeting the neighbor at the fence with a similar attitude of we are all in it together. Don’t give away any info, but tell him how you don’t have much either, but that you will help any way you can. Get the neighbors to think you are in the same unprepared boat, but that you will share what little you do have “in a spirit of community”. At least then they may not come busting in if your friendly as opposed to meeting the guy at the fence with a drawn gun.

This is totally wrong..........what's up with the two weeks......FEMA told me they would be here in three days so I am just going to sit here and wait for them...

What, you mean they are not coming??? Then that means the government lied to me! They would never do that, would they?

Very disappointed with the content. This was a one hour program at best. As for the prepper I agree it was believable. He had bunch of holes in his plan, but then when did he start? You always would like to have more time. If only...........

Pardon the necro-post, and it looks like I'm jumping on the bandwagon, but I'm not. I watched this travesty through the good offices of Youtube. It's hard to believe the Grosvenors, or whomever is running the National Geographic Society these days, allowed this damnfool thing to run under their label. Far too full of holes, far too optimistic.

Out here, east of the Kingdom of Nye, the casinos will run for a while, as they have their own inhouse generators. Whether they would stay open or not ... I couldn't rightly say. Damn well the real luxurious ones would shut down their high end stuff and get the big spender customers out safely.

Cash would be king for a bit. ATMs are probably designed to lock down when there is a power outage. Credit would be a laugh. The main body of folks that would profit from such an improbably optimistic fairytale as this would be, IMO, the prepper community, and not in bucks. Such a lightweight version of national SHTF would be a helluva dry run.

Such a load of ... cotton-candy as this was, I'd expect that just after power gets back on, either a back-to-business as Sheeple-normal, or a major swerve to more conservative living, for a short time anyway.

We could only HOPE that this light and frivolous brush with disaster was what we were gonna get. It isn't.
