I already posted in the 'what have you done to prep this week' thread, and I will double post that one here...

but in the mean time, whilst out tending the gardens, I also found these growing: http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/garden/0910141645a_zps0ff6de65.jpg (http://s605.photobucket.com/user/Sniper-T/media/garden/0910141645a_zps0ff6de65.jpg.html)

I haven't bible identified them yet... but there are enough to warrant it. any Fungi-heads out there who have an idea? save me some research time...

Mushrooms are bad ju ju unless you can absolutely guarantee what they are... You get an inedible one and you could be looking at some funky things so to speak... If you truly want an idea, I'd consider bringing them to a local mycologist...

Now that would take ALL the fun out of it... lol

I regularly pick and eat a dozen or more that I can identify, and steer clear of another few dozen that I know are bad. When I find something new, I go to great lengths to positively identify it before I so much as touch it with bare skin, never mind eat it.

Identified these:

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/garden/0910141857a_zps0b038b38.jpg (http://s605.photobucket.com/user/Sniper-T/media/garden/0910141857a_zps0b038b38.jpg.html)

.

as this:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactarius_controversus

also known as a poplar milkcap. Which makes sense, since I live in a poplar forest. lol.

sadly, inedible!

I'll start pulling them out to make room for more of the good ones.

We get wild morels on our property. BWRR has to be careful not to mow them down...they are yummy.

I tried that a few years ago, but we had the hottest driest summer ever, and nothing grew. I'm going to try again.

Buy yourself a book for your area, as a slight regional variation can make one species look like another... and that could be bad. I'll keep snapping pics and posting as I come across them.

Momabear, our morels grow out near the apple trees at the base. They are short lived so you need to be watching for them. I'll make sure to contact you when we see ours pop up since if you have any on your property it will be at the same time.

There are kits you can buy online that you put onto dead logs, don't know how expensive they are though.

Was picking papanke yesterday, and came across a clump of these:

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/garden/0915141633a_zps4750b3ad.jpg (http://s605.photobucket.com/user/Sniper-T/media/garden/0915141633a_zps4750b3ad.jpg.html)

If you go back to the fist few picks, it looks like my beloved papanke...

But it isn't!
Flip them over and you see the difference. There is a true papanke on the left showing the underside for comparisons:

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/garden/0915141633b_zps7a8e5199.jpg (http://s605.photobucket.com/user/Sniper-T/media/garden/0915141633b_zps7a8e5199.jpg.html)

I don't remember what the imposters are called, but I know that they are a sure fire trip to the stomach pump.

Another pile of mushrooms... look closely:

http://i605.photobucket.com/albums/tt140/Sniper-T/garden/0921141658a_zps3fbf9809.jpg (http://s605.photobucket.com/user/Sniper-T/media/garden/0921141658a_zps3fbf9809.jpg.html)

notice the two in the front? Different colour and shape/size of the gills. That's two 'bad' mushrooms mixed in with my papanke's. Probably not enough to get sick on, but that is why I always double check each mushroom before processing or eating.

Everyone should recognize these, standard white button that you would buy at the store:

More to identify:

I've never seen anything like this before:

I know we used to pick these when I was a kid, but not from this area, so I want to double check:
