Afternoon folks. I've been asked to provide a sitrep here from Rob - he sent me a text this morning at 0730 PST saying he was taken to the hospital and had a blocked bowel which requires surgery. Talked to him briefly on the phone around 0030 and he was heavily drugged and still waiting for surgery, and I got another text from him at 1313 saying he was headed into surgery at that time.

If you guys could keep him in your thoughts and prayers, we'd both appreciate it. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll provide info here as I can and as I receive updates.

Thanks.

James

Thanks James, keep us updated please. Also let him know the ANTS are all informed and wishing him the best... and I want some of the drugs he has! J/K of course, but maybe it will get a grin out of him!

Cheers,

He's in good spirits and up to his old tricks, he asked if I was going to visit him in the hospital that I should bring Danielle with me (my fiance he has a crush on). I figure the day he calls and isn't cracking jokes or trying to steal my girl that things are pretty serious on his end. Luckily, today wasn't that day.

As 11 Bravo said; Thanks very much for the notice James and that all ants are at the ready to help if they can.
Hope someone is watching his bees and such.
Please alert all nurses that he's a rascal. ;)

I'm sure he'll get a chuckle or 2 when he sees this thread. Haven't heard any updates from him yet. He went into surgery about 2 1/2 hours ago.

I was out of cell reception most of today, and got a voicemail from him. Surgeon said everything went "very well" and he's been allowed to have clear fluids. His phone was off when I called him back, so either his battery had died or he was taking a nap.

Also, you can go ahead and send that garlic sausage to me and I'll forward him any leftovers.. ;)

Talked to him yesterday and he sounded better than I've heard him sound in several months, which is fantastic. He's feeling a lot better (hard to believe huh?) and he was discharged this morning. I'm sure he'll be along today or tomorrow here as well.

HELLO BOYS! (think...Ocean's 13, when Rubin walks into the Casino)

it was an Umbilical Hernia Rupture w/ Bowel Incarceration. lot of $2-$3 words for a butt load of pain. i was discharged at 14:27 hrs home by 15:00 hrs. finally got settled down enough to get online. had puppies to play with. yes it went well, the part that got fixed, during however i coded twice and had a 'rough time' coming out from anesthesia. the coding is due to other medical issues going into it. talked to surgeon at great length before and after. it was something that needed to be done, really no choice. i lost several inches of the small bowel, due to bruising, surgeon said ' harder for you now, but easier on you in the long run'. i have VERY GOOD Doctors looking after me, not 'in house' doctors. mine have formed a 'Group Care' deal, with general physicians and a surgical team. they have a nurse that will stop by if i feel i need her. i am home, resting and taking care of me. no pain meds for 24+ hrs. i have this thing whipped! but, rest assured i have them if needed. :) no real pain, just some discomfort, horrendous gas, mostly. but too be expected. as Jimbo stated, i feel better than i have in months.

just for the guys.... plenty of young and pretty nurses around. no pictures though. see ladies, i kept it g-rated.

as for the good thoughts and concern, you guys are the bestest!

any questions, thought or concerns, just ask. be here all week. Be Sure to TIP your waitresses... (throughs mic to stage floor and exits left)

Late, but glad to see all went well. Had a hernia with incarcerated bowel myself once, so I got a pretty good idea how you feel.
It'll get better, stay moving will help, just don't overdo it.

Feel better about life? I'm sure the docs told you what would happen if you decided to just "ignore it".
Realizing life could have been over tends to make you feel better about it when that doesn't happen.

just a little update.

went to my dr. today for a visit. Lauren removed the stitches/staples, nice girl she is. i told her i didn't like pain. she started with the staples and i hollered a bit. she smacked me on the leg and the first words out of my mouth were 'foreplay, i like it' poor thing blushed. LOL

doc came in and we talked for a minute and he said 'looking and doing better than i had expected, considering where you were when we started this'. just a little seeping from a small spot. if it doesn't stop in a week, i need to go back to see him. back to driving. (yeah me) nothing like being stuck at home with all kinds of places i could be. just have to take it easy for 3-6 wks and no lifting over 10 lbs for 6-8 wks.

little more discomfort this week, eating is getting better. main thing is i am in good spirits. feeling really good.

Did I ever tell you about Mary Sue? She painted ships in Hong Kong, all using rags. They would trade for scrap metal, old line, what ever gear your could spare or scrap. You supply the paint, she and her crews would hang over the side of your ship and paint that sucker out all the way to the water line......with rags. You'd be surprised how damn nice it looks. This old woman has been doing this for years, I mean like YEARS. She's like a Navy Sea Story all by her self. Every West Pac sailor knew who Mary Sue was. Well, If you were a Boatswainsmate anyways. OK that's my bedtime story for tonight........

Did I ever tell you about Mary Sue? She painted ships in Hong Kong, all using rags........

A little more about this...

Mary Soo was one of the more remarkable individuals whose path crossed mine. She and her crew of mostly women would contract to paint an entire Navy ship while it was anchored at Hong Kong. Hong Kong was always the high point of every WESTPAC cruise, liberty was generously granted. One of the things that made this possible was Mary Soo and her outfit. Typically, we would stop in Hong Kong for a full week of rest and recreation (R&R).

Here is a panorama of Hong Kong harbor showing Navy ships anchored out in the bay —there were no port facilities:

Hong Kong Harbor

Upon arrival Mary Soo or one of her lieutenants would come aboard and work out a deal to paint the ship. Sometimes she would do the job just for the right to the garbage from the ship’s messes. Because Hong Kong was a liberty port, and a good portion of the crew was ashore at any one time, much of the food prepared aboard ship went unconsumed. This was carefully packaged and turned over to Mary Soo who sold it here and there in the city. It was sometimes wryly observed by seasoned salts that food purchased by sailors ashore might have been had for free aboard ship.

Because Navy regulations prohibited paying foreign nationals in cash for work accomplished on the ship, other means of compensation had to be found. Garbage was one solution, but the PICTOR was quite experienced in these matters, and we would usually load up with war surplus scrap metal in the Phillipines before proceeding to Hong Kong. Mary Soo was always delighted to see all of that stuff, especially if there was brass invovled.

After the deal was completed, a small fleet of sampans would arrive and an army of mostly women would file aboard to start painting. We provided the paint and they did the work. One reason that most of them were women was because Mary Soo also ran an orphange. She would “buy” unwanted female children and raise them in her orphnage. She probably saved the lives of many girl babies in this way. When the chilren were old enough to work they would join the ship painting effort. As workers they were paid a small wage, but this was put into an account for them which they would receive in full upon reaching adulthood. After that they could stay with Mary Soo or make their own way in the world. Sometimes some of the small children would accompany their older counterparts out to the ship. They didn’t actually come aboard but would stay on the sampans alongside. I remember on one occasion looking over the side and watching several girls of about age five or six playing on the stern of one of the boats. One of the girls was blond and fair. Needless to say that was highly unusual. I wasn’t close enough to see her facial features, but she was speaking fluent Chinese. I assume she was one of Mary Soo’s orphans.

The workers were always dressed in ragged, paint-covered clothes and they all wore the conical coolie hat as protection from the Sun. It was almost impossible to tell what they looked like. Instead of brushes, they used rags or textile waste to spread the paint. The few men there were used long poles to paint the sides of the ship from sampans moored alongside. They were a good natured bunch and there was much laughing and joking between the girls and the PICTOR’s deck force.

Because the PICTOR was such a good paying ship, May Soo always threw a big party for us at the end of the week. It was at this party that I first saw Mary Soo in person. She looked to be about eighty years old at the time (1963), yet she was obviously a very shrewd business person. The big surprise at the party, however, was the girls — they were gorgeous! They all wore their best party dresses, had their hair done and their makeup on. Our first reaction was these can’t be the same girls that painted the ship, but they were.

Several years after I left active duty I read in the newspaper that Mary Soo had died. It made the news all over the world.

Not mine, but sniped from here:

Great news! Keep up the good work, No Brain, No Pain! You don't think about it, it won't hurt.......as for Mary "SOO" maybe we delt with one of her daughters, hell who knows. Was quite the show though, she do good work, make ship shiney long time no shit. Well at least till we make it back to the states right? Nope, we had to paint her again in Pearl before we got back.
