View Full Version : Breach of OpSec... by your TV

I haven't confirmed this, just came across it elsewhere...

Be careful what you say in front of your Samsung TV. It's listening to you!!.

Many Samsung "SmartTVs" come equipped with voice recognition, which allows you to bark commands at your TV. Since the television is always listening for your voice, Samsung has warned its SmartTV customers that every word is being captured and sent over the Internet.

In their privacy statement and in their warnings in the fine print it says "Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition," Samsung posted in its SmartTV privacy policy.

Okay, that's pretty creepy.

And upon further reading..... the camera is also sending pic's to third parties....

So much for the late night snuggle on the couch.

Need to do some research on LG's. Also, our department has installed a lot of monitors in conference rooms at work. I'm sure they would not want to broadcast the stuff that goes on.

If anyone finds some links please post them up.

Well I'm safe our internet service sucks, we have ATT. Maybe they will up grade it to hear better, that would be ok.

We dream about getting AT&T internet. Our internet really sucks. It's satellite internet, and 15 ft from the router, my iPad says it's not connected to the internet because no wireless can be found. And the air printer we were forced to buy due to Apple won't recognize it, as the signal is too weak. Then these is a data limit, so don't even go there. Lol

Okay, you can't bitch about your internet speed until you post your results to this test. It is actually fast today. It is usually around .3mbps.

I am supposed to only get 25mbps just so I can stream movies for the wife and kids online. Found a sneaky way to up it though. Didn't know I upped it that much.

I always unplugged any microphones and covered cameras on my computer after using, maybe I'm just paranoid. It doesn't come as a surprise to me that these "smart" products have incorporated this spyware kind of stuff. I would never buy a product that has that capability that I could not disable, I don't even watch TV anyway.

1002ms
.52 DL

The internet is really shaky and unreliable here.

post how???

Down here since we live on the military base all of our houses are connected constantly. They just cant get access because they dont have the special router to decrypt the signal or something like that. All I did was splice into my neighbors as well as my own since they didn't use theirs. Since my router keeps demanding 25mbps from 2 separate circuits I guess it is doubling it. A friend of mine tipped me onto it and did all the wiring stuff for me so if I sound vague I apologize. I'm not sure I understand it myself.

This was the first time I ever tested the speed. I figured all I got was a little faster because of having a double connection so less resistance. Kind of like electricity, better flow through more contact.

I was nice though and gave the neighbors the password since we could both technically get in trouble.

Our tv is just before those "smart tvs" came out. The xbox has the kinect, which has a camera and mic and can be voice commanded, and is hooked to the internet, but I unplug it from the console unless it is being used.
My laptop has a piece of the extra thick rubber electrical splicing tape across the camera.

Yeah, and the fast one is a cheap one I bought at walmart about 8 years ago. The slower one is a nice one that work bought.

Sniper-T

you may be able to make some adjustments to it to improve it...

Google the type and model of the router, find the spec sheet and check what the max packet size is. adjust yours accordingly.

It occurs to me that this is the last item in the dystopian novel/blueprint 1984 to fall into place. Samsung just made the "telescreen". Orwell would have been either proud or terrified. The major totalitarians of the 20th century would have publicly dressed in drag and copulated with Brahma bulls for a fraction of such technology.
