i started a new thread not to Hijack Domeguys thread.

like i said in an earlier post. i have been wanting to get set-up in the garage for sometime, but life seems to have it's own plan at times. anyway after building a suitable bench, 24" x 8' x 3'4" @ 33 1/2" off the floor, to mount a bench top band saw, 1" x 30" belt sander and a drill press. the scroll saw has it's own stand. i ran a couple sticks of 1/2" emt, pulled some wire and made up some receptacles, hung a light and i am in business. i will post pictures of the bench and recps, if you guys are interested. i decided i need a chopping block to do rough shaping. there was one out in the yard left over from a fire a couple months back, i mortised in 3 legs and secured with 5" lags, for stability.

here is what i have done in just an hour or so this evening. i started on a different spoon. in the pictures are the tools i used. this is the blank i am using.

this is my best buddy, Belle. funny how a dog thinks the sun sets and rises in their owner. i have 2, Belle is the one that has to be near me at all times. she is a Kemmer Cur as best as i can tell. she was a rescue puppy. i have had her since she was 'about' 5-6 wks old. she was found wandering next to a road in the middle of nowhere.

thank you.

this isn't me, i heard it somewhere and it has always stuck in my head. 'time is what you find, when you want to do things you want to do and talent is when you can just do something'.

if you guys are interested, once i get through Spring, there will be more stuff that i do.

LOL there's a smart-ass in every crowd. you could if i varnished it! :p

this is just the first one i have done. don't know what it will be used for or if? it's a user for sure. i have some oil finish that is food safe.

even though it looks all dainty, it's pretty strong. think teaspoon.

Me too!

note: bad pictures tonight. not a clue as to why, maybe camera is dying. this is all a work in progress! still deciding what i want to make/build/cut/sand. this is just a place to do it.

my Muse.

http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo102/robsdak/wood%20carving/100_0495_zps5htzd0br.jpg (http://s366.photobucket.com/user/robsdak/media/wood%20carving/100_0495_zps5htzd0br.jpg.html)

this is looking right to left. Craftsman Contractor Series 20" Variable Speed Scroll Saw (old C Arm, 1996 model) and a Delta 13" Drill Press. there is also my Milwaukee M12 Drill and Impact. you can also see where i came from the panel with a 1/2" LB to 1/2" EMT to the first recp. behind the scroll saw and then to the quad recp above the bench.

http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo102/robsdak/wood%20carving/100_0503_zpsgcyxodzr.jpg (http://s366.photobucket.com/user/robsdak/media/wood%20carving/100_0503_zpsgcyxodzr.jpg.html)

this is the middle of the bench. the quad recp has 2 circuits in it. 1 is lighting, so when tools are running there is no flicker on start up and the other is power. all the recps. are wired together, reason being no one tool is pulling enough to hurt anything. the conduit running up the wall is for lighting, using fluorescent lighting with plugs. reason behind this, when i leave i use the breakers in the panel as switches/disconnects and it turns everything OFF! going to add a second light over the bench. there is also a 1x30" Harbor Freight Sander. it's worth the money, i have had the same thing made by Delta and it was LOUD, rattled and was hard to track. this one was cheap and is quiet, besides it tracks straight.

http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo102/robsdak/wood%20carving/100_0501_zps4y9zkotb.jpg (http://s366.photobucket.com/user/robsdak/media/wood%20carving/100_0501_zps4y9zkotb.jpg.html)

this one you can see the Craftsman 12"? Variable Speed Band Saw and where the conduit ends. the chopping block is shown with the legs attached

http://i366.photobucket.com/albums/oo102/robsdak/wood%20carving/100_0504_zpsprp0xims.jpg (http://s366.photobucket.com/user/robsdak/media/wood%20carving/100_0504_zpsprp0xims.jpg.html)

the bench is simple enough. 3/4" B/C ply and 2x4's attached to the wall in the back with legs to the floor in the front. it's built like a wall/floor in a house, 16" OC and screwed together with 3-1/2"deck screws and the top is down with 2" deck screws. oh, and it's all glued with Gorilla Wood Glue. built strong enough that i can sit a transmission on it and have no worries of it breaking. mot that i plan on doing it. :)

Not bad bro! Nice area to work in.

thanks. it's just 1 side of a 2 car garage. it's a work in progress. i don't need to have the bigger saws, i have a buddy that i have built him a shop, really, that has all the bigger saws. i built the 'shed' 22 yrs ago and since he got into bees, he needed or so he thought he needed to build bee boxes. so we set about filling the place with tools. everything you'd need, thickness planer, two 10" belt drive saws, jointer, floor model drill press, air tools out the wahzoo, dust collection, air run through out the building, big band saw, miter saw. i can mill the pieces i need at his place and have 'small wood' here.

mine is for when i can't sleep and want something to do in the wee hours of the morning. i could go over to his place, but that would mean getting dressed and driving 15 min. :D easier to bum around here.

i have a fly tying set up in my bedroom if i think about it one day, i will snap a pic or 3 and post up. i was real big into it for like a month. then it sorta waned off. now it's a glorified junk catcher.

i know, i used to be that way also. always chasing that $. but, now that i am medically retired, i have all the free time 3 men could use up. the down side is i broker than a crackhead scrounging around... LOL i manage to do things a little at a time and in the big scheme of things it's all that matters.

there other thing i have trouble with is settling on 2-3 hobbies... NO, i need 8 different things going at once. the upside too that is, if i get bored i always have something to do. :D

3 1/2 yrs ago at the age of 50 while studying to get my electrician liscence, I had had enough of the pain I had been suffering in my neck and back. I had just been taking pain pills and muscle relaxers like candy just to make it through the day for 25 yrs. It got so bad I finally went to see a neurosurgeon, and to make a short story long, I was on the OR table the next day. They took out 3 discs and routed around with the bone drill and files, and fused my neck, and told me to come back when I couldn't stand the pain in my lower back and they would do the same for it. I went back to work after 4 months off and was only able to make it five weeks before I decided I had to retire of quit. I had 20 yrs with the company, so they declared me a fall risk and sent me home. So now I am medically retired also with nothing to do but putter around the house. For the first yr, I didn't do much but get pissed at the world, which didn't get me to far. The second yr I got into astronomy. I kind of over did it on Ebay....see picturehttp://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/6400e3093d4068513b650b2168ea1ebe_zps0e5fc645.jpg

Some I bought just to get a better scope, some I bought just to get a lens, tripod, or some goodie on it, then resell it. But after almost a yr, my neck just wouldn't let me get into the positions needed, so I started selling them off and kept one. That's when I decided to get back into woodworking again. I loved it in shop class in the 8th & 9th grade. So I bought a used Shopsmith on Ebay, then more parts to go with it, got a second mini Shopsmith, found many things were just too low, (I'm 6'3") which was hurting my neck and back. So again to make a short story longer, I have made many modifications to my shop/dome garage to fit my needs. You otta see it. Most everyone would not be able to reach my tools, such as my bandsaw, the work plate is over 5 ft off of the ground, but I don't have to bend my neck. I started making toys for my grandson, then started selling some on Etsy and Ebay, and now it seems I have a small business pulling in over a million penny's a decade. So that's my story, so stop impersonating me.

LOL DG. mine is a little different. i already had my Journeyman's License and was working. i thought i had a summer chest cold and long story short it was determined that i have CHF - Congestive Heart Failure, Diabetes w/ Renal Complications, Hypothyroidism and High BP, i knew about the BP. i was sick first, damn it... :p all joking aside, i wish i weren't. i have good days and BAD DAYS! here lately they seem to be fairly good.

i haven't gotten around to the selling part, yet. i would like to get back into do scroll saw things. i did it back in the early 90's. i have won a contest or 2 and have been published in a catalog. i entered and won a contest for The Winfield Collection.

yes neat and tidy - needs to be. i don't know any other way. i just put it together, the other day. everything has a place and a place for everything. i sweep and vacuum every time i leave. if i don't the puppy drags it into the house with her. i am still debating if i want to paint the floor.

DG, It isn't just you.
Rob, that place for everything and everything in its place is great in planning, but when the space runs out from all the shit you have, things tend to go vertical. And every tool I need is on the bottom.
Actually mine is not horrible, but it could be much better. Labeling would do wonders for me, but I'm to damn cheap to by a labeler.

Domeguy

I totally agree with you Robsdak, but with having my left arm useless since Christmas morning, the shop has been a catch all. And when the doc released me, I have been so busy trying to catch up. I just got the bank trucks out, when I got a custom order for 2 shop vans that are mostly all hand worked, with sliding doors and roll up door in the back,( which is driving me crazy) then I have to get three pieces done by Wednesday for a judging to get into a craft store. Then I have together 6-10 small cars together to be ready to take to the car dealerships, THEN, maybe I can get the chance to put away a few things, but first I have got to find that damn hammer. So much for a hobby.
But at least in theory, I totally agree with you.http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/7f440562759b55970d149f36e8a2692a_ .jpghttp://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/4775161e624d3542e41f8e223f6d659c_zps8d052add.jpght tp://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/d2d814a0df654575e390a6021b579b8e_zpsc3aa25a7.jpght tp://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/6b0d68ee9ce70322853630f51f86e909_zps578e1feb.jpght tp://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/a56a1c2f291b43b60912dd3b62f9606b_zps8bafea60.jpg

Did I spy one, or two Shopsmith's in those photo's? Looks like one set up vertical for drilling, the other horizontal for saw work.

I like those things. My dad has one that's twenty plus years old. For the most part has had zero problems. I think his power switch died and that was an easy fix. If your space is limited they work real well. Their scroll saws are pretty good and the horizontal boring is a nice feature for assembling large multi board panels. They aren't a substitute for high quality individual machines by any stretch but they are great machines for what they are.

That's a good eye you got there boss. After the astronomy phase, I decided to get back into woodworking. I bought a used one off of Ebay, and bought a few accessories. After my wife saw I was going to stick with it,I was allowed to get a few more things. After I decided to try and make a little money off of these machines, I decided to get a mini, which I use mainly for the router and the sander, and it keep the big one for the sawing and drilling. It has worked out pretty well for me in this setup..this way,I have more time to focus on keeping the shop kept up...NOT.

Making the custom toys I make, I am constantly going back and forth from the bandsaw to the sander. Changing from bandsaw to sander to bandsaw to sander to bandsaw...was driving me crazy ad taking a lot of my time. I sold the bandsaw and bought the mini stand with the motor for a good price, and it has paid for itself in the amount of time saved. I would highly recommend a used Shopsmith to someone who wanted a small workshop in a small space. And even in the middle of this trash dump, I was able to create 2 of these custom built stepvan for a customer who wanted a replica of their mobile photo shop. They are not finished as I am still waiting to hear how they want the interior finished. The exteriors are going to be professionally painted., I still have to put on the bumpers, lights and such.

Nice work DG. The stand alone power units for the shop smith are nice and save a boat load of time with change overs.

Thank you. Not having much space, working in my 26' dome circle, was made even smaller by having to have certain things against the wall such as a freezer, work bench, shelves, etc. and having to leave space for the overhead door entrance and regular door made the space even smaller. I wonder if a guy ever decided they had too big of a shop? But looking back I wish I had built a bigger garage. I bought the Shopsmith exactly because you can do almost anything in woodworking you need to get done in a small area. I belong to a local woodworking club, and it have found about 1/2 of them have an old Shopsmith in the corner they have deligated to a single use. The only problem is when you are doing a project and need to fine tune it. It is a major pain in the ass to swap tools every 3 minutes. I did upgrade to have the larger saw table which has helped, and made it safer. The mini is not a stand alone moter, but is like the regular shopsmith, but smaller and doesn't have the ability to tilt to make a drill press. But if I already have one that does, I don't need it to. I use the mini mostly as a belt sander. The band saw from shopsmith was OK, but I much prefer to have it as a stand alone machine. I wish I had the room for a good table saw, but that will happen another day when I build a larger shop someday, all run from solar power.

i always wanted a Shopsmith. never got the opportunity to use one. just looked neat. your space is small? i am using 1/2 of a 2 car garage. might be the same size? i don't need all that much room for the things i do. i have a friends shop i can go cut the bigger stuff to size, then if i need i have another that has a full blown cabinet shop i can use anytime.

too big of a shop? blasphemy! :D if the resources where there, i'd have a 50' x 75' w/spray room and wood storage. all the tools i could ever use. all stand alone tools.

i am looking at getting a Midi Lathe. i want to do Turned Christmas Ornaments. we will see.

Keep an eye out on ebay, I've seen some sell very cheaply. The only thing is they are usually a pick up item only, and to make it cheap, it needs to be in your area.
I've been wanting to use the lathe more, but the toys are keeping me too busy. I was just ask to join the local craft association store today, so I have to now make more things to take to them...so much for a relaxing hobby.
I found this one on ebay for $350 as a pickup in St. John's, Fl

nice. i like that. here's the rub, i am still paying for the surgery i had in Oct. last year. any big purchases i make will have to be after it's paid for. St' Johns is about 5 hrs from me. not a bad deal. the ones around here are selling for $800 - $1200 on Craigslist.

That is what we thought Hillarycare and Obamscare were support to do for us. I thought it was a bad idea when Prisident Clinton, Hillary not Bill, proposed it in the 80's, but I thought I would wait and hear what they had to offer. It's all gone down the crapper since then. I think our health care is worse now because of it. When we lived in England,( although we never used it being American Military family), we had relatives who visited. My Uncle had to go to the emergency room for some reason. Even though he had insurance, they would not take it. It was all free, mind you this was back in 1969. Things might have changed.

I finally found my attempt at wood carving. My wife had put it on a shelf thinking I was done with it. It still has a long way to go. I went to a wood carving meeting in early January for the first time. They set me up with the bark which was cut in half and reglued with white glue and a piece of paper. They told me when I was ready to separate it to just put a few drops of water on the top and it would come apart really easy. I have about drowned the thing and I still can't get it apart. And if you can't tell what it us, it's a castle.

i do somewhere, where i haven't a clue. the design i won with was a Light Box. there were 3 submitted and all 3 ended up as a package. there was a Halloween, Christmas and Easter design.

i am currently looking for the older patterns i cut. i have found one on PDF that the owner sent me, just haven't cut it out yet. they are compound cut scroll saw shelves. butterflies, hummingbirds, welcome, bows. really neat shelves when done. i cut them from Red Oak. i prefer quarter-sawn for the tops. i did a hand rubbed Tung Oil finish.

I still wish you would post some of your work when you can. I know I would like to see some more.
This is what I have been working for the last week or two. They are oak and walnut.
