Well since everyone seems to want to talk about it, we may as well start this. Just finished chapter 15 last night. Got the first 5 books on standby. If anyone needs them let me know.

I find his writing style is really difficult to get into. He's a little too insightful about the character personally for me but at least it isn't written like a Tom Clancy novel about the government aspect of it.

Want me to tell you how it turns out? Just kidding. It is a good series. I do like the way things for their community was set up. I need to read it over again some day.

Well it sounds like you will not be getting stuff done until the series is read. Hope you wife is understanding. I find when I get some of these series' I just drop everything and read. There are times when I actively avoid books so I can get things done.

My old Kindle is by the bed, waiting for me when I lay down a little early to unwind. Im half way done with the first book.

Sure, his writing style is not quite like the big names, but Im not having any problem following it, there are some of the "other" writers that have done a lot worse.. so Im pretty happy.

Hes about to leave his government auditor job, and I dont blame him... being surrounded with sin all day and you cant speak out would be like.... being a corrections officer! HA HA!


Looking forward to finishing the first book... he just got a Glock but he has failed to locate a PAIR OF BALLS. The relationship is kinda interesting and I oddly and wondering how this is going to pan out when the matrix goes down...

The scenario in this book is one that I never really expected or paid attention to. I always assumed it would be from an attack outside our country or our citizens rebelling against the government. Though it does make sense that the government is stupid enough to sabotage itself.

This type of scenario for me would be less alarming than any of the others because there would still be tons of people trying to prolong the collapse and cling to what was left of the organization vs a nuclear attack where things fall apart instantly and everyone panics.

Its been going on for too long already, its like the turd that is circling the bowl caught in the swirl and cant escape, eventually it goes down the tube.

Spend more than you make, raise taxes, print more money which reduces the buying power, repeat over and over and the turd eventually flushes.

This country is in fact a soft fascist state and that is a recipe for disaster.

It started with Jekyel Island (Sp?) and been swirling for doom ever since.. It actually started sooner but that was a turning point. We have been on the racetrack to financial destruction since before my birth...

I think his observations are pretty accurate, and if there is a matrix down situation to be had, I think this is the most probable.

The progressives are all about BIG gov and they know whats best for us and pass laws, raise taxes to push there agenda. There mindset is askew, I honestly think they are not in touch with us, the people. I know they dont represent ME. But, the problem is... they are in charge.

A question I pose to the folks that have read the WHOLE series....

Using a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 being "No way in the world" and 10 being "Absolutely dead on" ... how close do you think that this series is to the way the US goes into the late 2010s and then into the 2020s?

Me, I don't know. It would be hugely hypocritical, at this time, for me to opine; I've not read the whole series. So I'll admit to not knowing enough to say, and relying on those that DO know enough to say.

Without giving it a time frame, I give it a possibility of 6-7. I think the fall of the fiat dollar is the greatest risk we have, but 1S1S might beat that to the punch...

... and now my former speedreading capability is coming back, albeit not as much or as fast as I would have liked.

I've not finished the decalogy yet. Gotta admit the events in the first two books alone, in spots, were/are way too likely, if not already prepared for by the RL regime in place now.

In TOM SAWYER, Twain laid out a difference between "Work" and "Play".

"Work" was what one HAD to do.

"Play" was what one WANTED to do.

Going along to get along, feed one's family, keep a roof overhead... That's WORK. Dirty and difficult some times, but it MUST be done.

Being a politician, for all intents and purposes, is PLAY.

With OTHER peoples' lives.

Oh... I note "Gadsden yellow" and "FC yellow". The branch color for armor units in the Army is yellow (Infantry is blue, Artillery is red, Medical is maroon, etc)... but not much armor in here so far.

Im on book 5, they just put some nice folks on a horse and sent the horse away... but the people stayed back. (Figure that one out guys! If you are reading the series, thats funny!)


As far as Grant being a "politician", at least he is trying to steer the boat into calm waters and keep it there.. thats proper politics.

You wonder how the hell did you NOT see all this before!

Being awake SUCKS honestly. Id much rather be back in my dream state, I was "happier" then But here it is, here I am... Im awake and cant go back to sleep, I cant see that happening... Im too long unplugged from the Matrix.

I forgot to mention, after the first year of podcast, Jack goes off into a deep rabbit hole of gat dam permiculture and never comes back to his roots... Reminds me a bit of Charlie Sheen (you never coming back bro).

Permiculture is valuable and has it's place... but I think its his "everything"" now... WTF ever...

No, I'm doing my deadlevel best orbiting the perimeter of the event horizon of that black hole. "299 Days" took me as close as I dare come. The deepest I got with that was that (IMO) piece of Pro-California hyper-propaganda known as WARDAY. Such a swallowing piece of abject literary fellatio I've never seen before or since. Limited nuclear war, and California not touched? GMAMFB. Kunetka should have stuck with writing about the infancy of nukes, and Streiber about his damn werewolves and Greys. (/IMO)

Now that I HAVE read the whole series, I will endeavor to answer my own question... but in parts.

IMO...

A money crash in the next ten years? 8-9

Said crash in the slow motion configuration seen in 299 DAYS? 2-3.

Recovery in as brief a time as shown? 0-1

The author has got caught up in the idea of 'pushbutton war' and its counterpart, 'pushbutton recovery'. All very nice, but needs a robust infrastructure to work. Throwing more wrenches into the machinery of infrastructure does not make it work better, and what government there was throughout most of the decalogy was all about that. If you have a prayer of hoping that what is left after a collapse works, you do well to make sure the wrenches you're throwing are NOT hitting the people that were best at doing the 'pushbutton' thing.

Starting from about two months before the Collapse, to the end of full hostilities ( and yes, even in 299verse there will be pockets needing dealing with ) and a year after that for '43'... the series should have been composed and written under the title '2099 Days'.

I just started book 6, The Crew is in training with The Team, but there is conflict on the horizon, anytime an SF shows up, theres gonna be gorilla action soon... The little incident at the power plant may not be over as they think, having the lone wolf FC try to throw weight around and never reporting back may have some recourse..

Book 7 now I think it is... Grant has been in the 17th for a while now, I find I speed past a page or two to get back on track on the story...

However, note to author... HEY! I GET IT! Pierce Point is going well and has a good system. I GET IT! The patriots are doing well! I GET IT! No need to reinforce it 6 times a chapter.

Even with that, Im too committed to the story to stop now, so Im moving forward with the read.
