I just saw the latest powerball jackpot and was wondering, how many here play the lottery?

I buy one ticket a week for our lottomax, and belong to two lotto pools (coworkers/friends)

I can see 1.4 BILLION dollars going a long way in my preps.

I play here and there. Usually one powerball easy pick and one mega millions. I quit picking my own numbers after learning the easy picks have a 70% greater chance of winning.

I see 1.4b doing way more than preps for me ;). That's a LOT of hookers and blow.

I rarely play any lotto. But I started on this one around the 400 million mark. Couple tickets a pop won't kill me I don't guess.

1.4B would go a long way toward what ever you wanted to spend it on.

I've never bothered with the lottery. Just always seemed pointless to me.

I play when it gets big. I will be playing again Wednesday.

I do every week. My Pop always said "you can't win if ya don't play" When he explained the Irish lottery ticket he would buy. No he didn't win the big prize but he came close a couple of times.

If I had 1.xB dollars, all the active members on this forum would move to my encampment and enjoy life there... with me being the ruler, of course. I have simple rules to follow: Everyone has a vote, everyone carries a weapon, and everyone carries there weight. Other than that, we live off grid... camp fires, hunt, fish, community dances, bingo.. When the bubble goes up we wont even know it... we wont be affected (except our high speed internet pipe goes down...).

The odds of winning are 292,200,000 to 1. Not very good odds of winning. My luck is I would win along with a bunch of other people. Why there were six other people who got 5 of 5 this last time. That would mean I would have to share. I would only get $233,333,333 and then after taxes I would probably only have about $125,000,000 let how would I ever feed the kids........

One other thing. It may be 292,200,000 to one but when you win it is 100%.

BTW I will be buy more tickets for this one too.

I swear, if I win, and they won't let me stay anonymous, if they ask me "how does it feel to win 1.5 billion dollars?" I'm gonna say... "Un f@*kin believable, now I'm only down $2500"

I should play at least once a week, one ticket only.. The phrase "you cant win if you dont play" is 100% true.

Lil'Bravo asked me a good question I cant answer.. she asked if I wont the BIG check, do you HAVE to go on TV? Im one that would want to keep it private so thats a good question...

Just saw some GREAT advice on FB about what you should do if you win: Call everyone you know, tell them you have a small emergency and would like to borrow $500....

Most won't help you out.

Remember that in a couple of weeks, when they come asking YOU.

If I did win, first thing I would do would be to retain a good lawyer who would be referred to us by a friend who is a lawyer himself and see what they could do to keep our name on the down low. I think it is possible to do that and keep your name out of the news.
It would be a challenge for me to figure out where to start with managing that amount of money, even on a short term basis, until I could figure out what I wanted to do.

There's ways around that part.

I have THE answer to solve all of the worlds problems. In these days, it seems most of the world hates everyone else due to their own religion, or the religion of others. So my solution would be for the leader from every known religion to buy ONE powerball ticket. It would seem to me, who ever was right, they would be the one to win. If they all lost, and Al the plumber from the Bronx won, they all would be wrong...and we could all sit down together and have a Pepsi and live in peace!

I saw on the news today, Tennessee is one of 6 or 7 states where state law requires release of your name.

do you guys have to claim the prize in your home state? If not, I'd be making the drive!

You have to claim the prize in the state you bought the ticket in....and pay any state and local taxes to that state.

Well I guess you guys heard I did not win.

For those of you who plan on wining in the future. If you do not take the lump sum but over time then you should be able to dodge your local taxes by moving. Here on the left coast it takes a while to establish residency in another state. So I would pay the 13% here the first year but then establish residence in say Washington State and save 13% each year in the future.:(

Only problems with annuity payments are, 1. The very real risk of getting an IOU one of these days because the govt doesn't have your money. 2. You know the tax rate today. You don't know what it will be in even a few years (Bernie says 90% isn't unreasonable for instance)

Sniper-T
01-15-2016, 06:37 PM
And... at least up here, if you die, the payments die with you and the governemt keeps the balance.

I would rather take it all now, pay the crunch, and if I die, I can leave the rest for friends/family and the CKC.

Fidel MD

You need to look at how the annuity is structured, too - in NY state it's variable and rear-loaded, for example the 1st year payout on the last jackpot would have been something like $15 million, the 30th year $32 million.

And Illinois isn't paying their lotto winners, they don't have the legal authority (unless thats changed recently).

Take the big check, invest at least 50% in some safe investments (besides copper, zinc, lead and nitrates) and live off the interest. You will do much better over taking the annuity.

Sniper-T
01-15-2016, 08:29 PM
They justify the rear loading by saying it 'takes the increasing cost of living' into account.

bacpacker
01-15-2016, 10:11 PM
Unless you are very young I see no reason to not take the cash pay out. By the time you are 35 to 40 your. Hanes of dying grow rapidly. I'm sure I could do better with the cash payout over 30 years than the annuity would.

Sniper-T
01-15-2016, 10:17 PM
the funny thing, is that people don't realize that they will lose more doing the annuity than with the payout. it just takes longer to lose it!

Sniper, if you win take the lump sum, up there in Canadia your chances are really high of being killed by a polar bear or a penguin stampede. Lo

Sniper-T
01-16-2016, 04:06 PM
Infinitely higher than you for the polar bears, but you are actually closer to the penguins than I am; and I would assume that you would eliminate that threat as they marched across the Rio Grande.
