View Full Version : Building a new hog trap

This is my 3rd one to build, first was a 4X4X8, and I was very heavy. Second is just hog panels held in by t posts with a door, very difficult to move. So I wanted one I could move easy. This one can be rolled into a trailer and then rolled to a spot with ease. Should be able to finish it tomorrow.

Showing my stupidity here, but how does it work? Do you get inside and call here piggy piggy piggy, and then hit him over the head with a big stick when he sticks his head in the hole?

I am thinking that a determined hog would make short work of that!

No way, it is 1 inch steel around the top and the door, and the wire is hog panel. I built 3 all with the same material and never had a hog tear it up. Still got the door and the wire on top and bottom.

The door is not on yet, but it is a root style door. Basically this is a very simple trap, use a stick to prop the door open, put some kind of food inside the trap. When the pig pushes through the door the stick holding the door open falls down. When the hog walks through the door falls down behind them. My buddy has been using this design for about 5 years now and it works great.

Here is a close up of the wire. There is no way a hog will break through.

BTW the trap is 8 foot across, by 3 foot tall.

Nice design. I was wondering how you triggered the door. Does it have a lock to secure it once it closes?

I stand corrected!

I can't wait to see the pics of it in action.

Thanks for sharing Helo!

Just the weight of the door keeps it closed. That way more hogs can push it open to get in, but they can't pull it to get out.

Makes sense now. I didn't think about the door being inside and drooping I to place. How many have you tried at once.

Sounds like you all have a large hog population in that area.

My dogs keep the hogs away from my place, but the lease I am on next door had a lot of hogs. My buddy's trap is the same size and he has caught up to 10 hogs at one time with it.

LOL, we can always use the meat. It does not get wasted. If we have too much friends get some, and if they don't want any, the dogs eat good.

Didn't have all day to work on it, spent 2 hours at the gym working out legs. Then had to fill feeders, 1000 lbs of corn later, i started on the trap. Almost got it done, just have to finish putting wire on the bottom.

Here is the door.

I made a prop for the door, just don't have it in this pic.

The guy who traps on my aunt's property uses a trap that sends him a live feed from inside the trap on his iPhone so he can decide whether or not to shut the door. If he's got a big one, or just a baby, he can wait for more to enter. Once he has what he wants, he touches a button and it slams the cage.

Really nice trap Helo. I like the door on it really well. No way they are getting out.

AK the remote trigger would be a nice touch.

That looks like a really nice set up. Many moons ago we used to catch hogs and then fatten them up to take to market. Is there a market for that or do you just butcher them? I understand some of the folks down your way have so many they just shoot them and let them lay. A friend of mine sent me a video of a group of about 100 hogs in a herd. The most we ever had to deal with would be a litter of small ones. Up here when they start to get big the will go off on their own.

I just butcher them. We have had herds of over 50 before.

That sounds expensive. Most of the places I put my trap don't have cell service, so even if I had the money it would not work here.

Here is the rod holding the door open. When a hog bumps the door the latch will drop and the door will close. More hogs can push into the trap after the door is closed.

If the cage has any corner the pig will use that corner to climb. Mine has 2 corners by the door, and the trap is only 3 foot tall. A pig could jump 3 foot easy.

Trap works well. Very nice pig. Congrats on getting the wife to butcher. Mine wouldn't get involved until it was ready to package, I don't think. Nice dog and chickens BTW.

.22?

helomech
02-06-2016, 12:10 AM
Yeah, .22lr. Marlin model 60. The first shot did it, but I wanted to end it as fast as possible.

We actually split the back bone in half, and then cut it into steaks. Wife blackened them tonight, it was delicious.

- - - Updated - - -

The wife needed more experience in butchering. She can handle rabbits by herself, but never did a deer or hog. Meant to get her to do one of the deer I shot this year, but weather sucked each time so I just knocked it out as fast as I could.

Here is the video of the hog going in the hog trap. The battery was almost dead, that is why the video sucks. The video before this one, the hog stuck it's head into the trap and walked halfway in, but then backed out.

I had an entree of wild boar at an downtown Vancouver restaurant 20+ years ago. It was delicious. I wish it was possible to hunt them up here in BC while at the same time they did not cause an ecological problem for whomever lives in their area.

I'd be signing up to take the mandatory hunting course in a heartbeat.

They actually have not tore up much of anything on my place. Now my friends land his field is so rough from hogs that you can barely drive across it. They do kill pine trees sometimes by rubbing on them, they like the sap to help with bugs.

Have you caught any more? Our roads are so bad after all the logging I can't really set more than a couple right now and it's starting to get hot already. I do have some coming in at that green stand that you and Dylan hunted just down from camp. I may go try to shoot one under the feeder here pretty soon. I need to get a camera up and see what time they're coming in.

No, moved it to a new spot just before I left for work. It is tied open right now.
