came across this on that Lehman's site and thought "Hmmmm, that might be worth having a few of"

first of all:

www.lehmans.com/p-83-adapter-ringlid-for-mason-jar-oil-lamp.aspx

add this:

www.lehmans.com/p-306-better-2-size-burner-for-oil-lamps.aspx

plop one of these on, and good to go:

www.lehmans.com/p-2113-clear-oil-lamp-chimney-3-base.aspx

Just add kerosene/lamp oil.

Pretty cool idea but once you add the "hoodie" it would become top heavy so I would think we'd have to make some sort of holder or base for it. LadyHK would be wondering what happened to all her canning jars, he, he.

Maybe top heavy once the jar was empty, but with a full quart jar, I don't think it would be tippy at all. If you were nervous about it, 6 additional jars filled with water, placed around it would help 'secure it. a wrap of duct tape and it would be 100% stable. Or even just the jar holder out of your canning pot.

Or better yet, fill them all with gas add a ..............OK I'm not supposed to talk about that stuff. Maybe I'll just stick with the wooden holder/base Idea............

Does anyone know how long you can store kerosene?

If stored properly... indefinitely. Although most literature puts a cap at 5 years. I have some in rotation that is close to 20 years old, and it burns just fine.

Has a lot to do with the container it is stored in. There is a "stabilizer" on the market as well.

Maybe this was answered somewhere else but what is the difference between kerosene and that coleman camp fuel or "white gas"?

Doesn't one of them have some type of parafin in it?

Coleman fuel contains a high amount of naphthalene so burns hotter than gasoline.
Paraffin is usually in lamp oil and is not recommended for most kerosene lamps like the Aladdin.
The paraffin does not burn cleanly and soots up the mantle in those lamps.

Coleman fuel/camp gas/white gas, pretty much if exactly all the same. Should only be used in pressurized type devices such as pump up stoves and pump up lanterns, etc..

Lamp oil/liquid paraffin pretty much the same thing, for oil lamp and hurricane lanterns, not much anything else.

Alladan lamps are a creature of there own, and worth looking into... Lehmans has them. There pricey, and make sure you have plenty of extra mantels. Are they worth it? Yup, and I want 1 or 3!

Least we forget, a decent deep cycle/gel cell battery, panel and charger and small inverter... running strings of LED Christmas lights works really well, lower cost investment, etc..

The only thing with the aladdin lamps is the mantles. I wish there was a version of those mantels that didn't break. I absolutely hate replacing them on my coleman lamp. Seems like every time I pull it out to use it I have to put new ones on it.

best you can do about keeping the mantles from breaking is to keep the shake - rattle - vibrate from the entire lantern - have a factory case with extra cushioning or DIY one .... when I was a kid family camping we went from replacing mantles every weekend to all summer long mantles by cushioning the lantern in a 5 gallon bucket ....

in any case you should be stockpiling mantles - they'll be worth an absolute fortune $$$$$ come SHTF time - think about the hundreds of Coleman lanterns sitting around unprepared & supplyless .... here's a US factory outlet for mantles wholesale: http://www.americanmantle.us/american-mantle-products/mantles-used-in-camping-lanterns.aspx

in regard to kerosene and everything related - read about it from the Guru - Miles Stair - he's a fellow prepper ..... http://www.milesstair.com/

Miles has a SHTF supply site also - good info included - worth the visit .... http://www.endtimesreport.com/survival_shop.html

for any of the "flame" type alternative lighting - extra especially if you have kids - I'd hot glue melt the candle holders, lamps ect ect to a bigger base like a kitchen cutting board - maybe glue them down to the bathroom vanity/nitestand/kitchen table for the duration to keep the kids from trying to move them ....

one last response - don't forget the bulk roll lamp wicking - fabulous SHTF stockpiling & barter item - http://www.milesstair.com/flat_lamp_wicks.html

Yes, but can you now find me bulk rolls of kevlar lamp wicks? lol

I had a gas stove once that ran off of a gigantic kevlar wick that I had to change out every year. (michigan so it was run almost nonstop)

not that unusual - some of the kerosene heater circular wicks are kevlar wove - guess those suckers are REALLY $$$$$

I got rolls and rolls of regular lamp wick. Up here it also doubles as strapping to hold your snowshoes on.

Might also use, for point light source, the short LED strips used for car trim. I've seen them complete with their own powerstrip for stepping down from the cig lighter, so I imagine the inverter could be omitted from the circuit. (Keep them things around, though, as they are, $ 4 $, the best electrical investment a prepper ever had).
