I am posting this thread here to document the repair work done to turn an old RV into a semi reliable bug out/hide out/camp out vehicle. They wanted $2500 in the ad, and in the picture it looked brand new. He neglected to show or tell about all of the extensive water damage to the roof and some of the walls. I ended up paying $1800 cash and drove it home. It has a twin bed in the rt. rear, and the bathroom in the left rear. A kitchen with a 3 burner stove w/oven under it, and the sink to the rt. Opposite this is a new electric refrigerator and a storage cabinet. Behind the driver seat is a couch that folds down into a small bed, and a double bed in the cab above the driver and passenger seats. Including the cab, I think it's about 25 ft in length. In the camper part, the usable space is about 7 1/2 ft wide and 18 ft length. I plan on gutting the entire inside. I will put in a queen mattress in the rear, the bedroom will be approx. 6 ft X 7 1/2 ft, with cabinets near the ceiling, build a few walls and relocate the bathroom in the middle on the rv, with a new kitchen behind the passenger seat, and the couch behind the driver seat. Cabinets all along the ceilings where available. So far I'm still in the tearing out shit stage. I've ordered a new propane instant hot water heater, and a new 2 burner propane stove. The old stove and over will be taken out, and the sink re-used. I plan on a small microwave also.
The bathroom is a one piece tub/shower, toilet and sink in an L pattern. I plan on reusing the entire unit. I will replace all of the plumbing, and put in new PEX water lines. I will put in new copper propane lines. I will replace all of the electric wiring with new lines, and wire it up for solar power, with a 5000w inverter. The AC unit works well for now, so it stays, and for a heat source, I plan to use my portable propane heater when needed. The Ginny needs some work, but for now, I have my 2000w portable Generac generator, and if at a campsite, I can plug into their AC.

Have you thought about hinging the bed where you can lift it, and store stuff under it?

when you re-do that plumbing make sure to work in tank & line drainage for winterizing - doesn't hurt to put in a connection for a compressed air blow out also ....

for the gas lines - an outside fitting for a campstove kitchen set-up comes in handy ....

insulate the hell out out of everything ....

Yes, the twin bed has a storage space below it, and I planned on putting hydrolic lifts on the foot end like on the hatch back of a car. Also, 1 or 2 water tanks will also go in there under the bed.

I haven't gotten far enough yet to draw my schematics for all of my plumbing, but that is a great reminder for drains.
I have a portable grill I will use for camping, but my pop up trailer I will be selling has that hook up for a grill.
And YES, I totally plan in heavily insulating it. Since most everything will come out, I will be butting fresh insulation throughout.

Use insulation that will not hold water - rigid foam, or maybe rock wool. Fiberglass will hold water, and when it freezes, bulge the sides out.

That's a good point, but I'm hoping there won't be any leaks to let water in..LOL

Today was more demo work until my back gave out. I disconnected the brains switch for the water pump, battery info, tank info, etc, and labeled both sides of the wires to make it easier to wire back up. I demoed the kitchen, took out the sink, and faucet for re-use. I pulled out the stove/oven/vent, and I will try to resell on Craig's list, eBay, or somewhere. I disconnected the old inverter and wiring to the old refrigerator. I demoed a bunch of storage shelves that had to come down to replace the roof supports. I went to the post office to pick up my roof vents I ordered and stopped in Walmart to pick up a new microwave. It has a grill feature built into the top inside, so it is also a broiler/grill. So far, this is how much I gave spent...$1800 for the camper, new 5000W/10000W surge inverter...$417, new microwave...$79, 2 smoke colored vents w/built in fans...$66, new propane instant hot water heater...$169, new 2 burner propane stove...$137. Hopefully this will be the major purchases, I will still need to buy some lumber, plywood, insulation, small piece of floor vinyl, piping, PEX, wires, ect...but I already have some of this. Total supplies, $868, plus the $1800, making a grand total so far of $2668. I hope to have it somewhat ready for a test run to take to Bonnaroo this June. It will be an early 1.0 version, but at least I will have a sheltered, Air Conditioned place to sleep, a place to cook, have clean running water, a place to take a dump and a shower, and refrigeration for my food and beer. What more could a man want?

I disconnected the water and drain lines from the bathroom. I took all the screws out holding the one piece fiberglass bathroom loose from the walls. I then took out the wall that was next to the kitchen. I took out the mattress and started demo on the bed frame that was attached to the wall next to the bathroom, then took out most of the wall. The insulation in the ceiling is so heavy and wet, I thought the ceiling might come down, so I left the rear support in. Here's what I'm thinking Domey. A well placed Bangalore torpedo or some well placed C-4 and we can clear that puppy out in an engineer hear beat. no fuss ; no muss. Broom & vaccum and we're done my friend.

Does ya need me to drive down with my bestest dog friend Claymore and help ? I'm sure I can get BWRR to help. :D

Welllllllllllllllll it looks to me as though you have your work cut out for you. It is a good thing you don't have anything else to do or you might not get the job done for another week... You are a better man than me.

I agree with Fidel on the insulation. If you use foam insulation then it will also give you a little better structure. The one thing you need to be sure of is the wiring. Once the foam in in you would be hard pressed to ever get wiring replaced. Consider conduit for the wiring. Are you replacing any of the studs, if so have you considered metal studs, the are lighter and hold up just as good.

It looks like 3-4 blocks of C-4 have already been used. I appreciate the help, but I'm afraid your bestest dog friend might get a little jelious..my bestest cat friend Brother has taken a liking to the mattress I threw out...and he does not like to share.

I will probably have to replace every roof bracing stud. I plan to use hardwood studs there, not pine. For the walls, I know I will have to replace some of them. I hadn't thought of metal studs...ill give it a thought as I get into the walls. I've never used the metal studs before, but this might be a good place for them. Thanks for the idea.
Depending on where and how many wires need to be run, some conduit might be a good idea.

you may want to consider spray foam insulation as well... it'll really rigid the shell up, and seal up any leaks that probably aren't there.

I've been slacking on the RV, as I have been doing some undercover prepping at Myrtle Beach, SC. Then I've had to make 2 of the wooden trucks I sell on the side, but now I have to put the nose to the grindstone...I've got three weeks to get it done. I bought 3 more 100Ah batteries, (total of 500Ah) 14 new lights, switches, battery cables, ect. Doing to be doing some serious demo and rebuilding next week. I've decided to keep the bathroom and kitchen where they were, saving time and materials. Getting rid of the couch, and putting the queen bed up front behind the driver seat. Gonna build a bench seat and table where the twin bed was in the rear, that can be made into a bed.

Well, with the help of an Aderall, I got my ass in gear and got medieval on the RV. I tore out all of the paneling, insulation, and the ceiling in the rear half. I am now wishing I had stayed home the day I went to look at it. Oh well, I now know just what I have to work with. All of the ceiling. Joists will need to be replaced, but my main concern is the top plates on all of the wall joists,(if you can call them that) they are mostly completely rotten on both sides. I think I will need to replace the ceiling aluminum plates, as they have more holes than solid area. The people that worked on it before figured you can't go wrong by putting more screws into it...wrong. http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/rv/8C347B72-01A5-4CC4-8C78-8A3493FBA7EB_zpsgqgv7irq.jpg (http://s48.photobucket.com/user/gantsum/media/rv/8C347B72-01A5-4CC4-8C78-8A3493FBA7EB_zpsgqgv7irq.jpg.html)

wow... Domey, I got to admit, you are a hell of a better man than I am. I would have marched right back to the guy who sold it to me, got my money back, then burnt down his house just on the principle of selling me something with that much work needing to be done. I gotta admit man, my heart is sinking when I saw those last pictures, knowing how much of a road you have in front of you. Ive never had to refurbish something to this extent, so Im hoping for the best here man.

I'm looking at it this way...I'm fixing it up to use on the weekends in the Spring thru Fall months, local use only. I'm not going to be driving it to Alaska in the middle of Winter. It's just going to be used by my future wife and myself to take a break at the local scenery, and to take the grandkids to the lake on the weekends. It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. We just need a place to sleep, cook, clean up, shelter from the elements, and indoor plumbing seems to be important to the women for some bizarre reason. I've got nothing better to do in my spare time but projects around the house, and this is just one of them. I was thinking of replacing the roof...but why? Just fix it so it doesn't fall in on itself for the next decade, and I'll be happy. It's resale value will be practically nothing no matter how much money and time I put into it anyway. I've never had the money my whole life to be able to take something to an expert and tell them to fix it, and then write them a check. Early in life I learned to do most everything myself due to necessity. This is why I built my own house, because I saved over $100,000 doing it myself. So is this a challenge, yes. Do I regret buying it now seeing it total damage, yes. If I am going to replace one board, I might as well replace 20. So today, I'm going to keep taking out the million screws some idiot put in the rotten wood, pry up the roof edges, and replace the rotten lumber to keep it from falling in on itself, and keep it from leaking. Anyone want to buy a slightly used RV?

(heaving imprecations at the dead Chevy Astro, and cursing the wallet for not being full enough)

This.

An acre or two near the end of the utilities, a septic tank, enough of a pad to park the RV and a small garage, garage being for a truck and full truck dolly, and I'd be set.

Went to Lowe's today and bought 2- 3/4x4x8 sheets of MDF for the bed and bench, 1- 1/2x4x8 for the sides of the bed frame and bench, and 8- 1/4x4x8 for the walls and ceiling, 2 large rolls of pink insulation, and 17-2x4x8 for general framing. Also 6 tubes of silicone calking, and a new calking gun. Last week bought new air staple gun, staples, 2 inch and 3 inch screws, 18 ga water for DC lights, 3 AC boxes and plugs, and a few things I can't think of. Yesterday I took out over 100 screws from the top rear and along 4 feet on each side of the top. I put a tarp over the RV, as it might rain. I hade to put up temporary bracing up as the roof wanted to fall in with no support. Tomorrow I start cutting out the rotten top plates and wall joists, (2x2) and replace them, then replace the roof supports, (2x4) and 1/4 inch ply on top of that, then secure the roof down into new wood. Then calk the hell out of it. Oh, I almost forgot. While driving to Lowe's, some drunk pulled out of the turning lane right into me, and placed a nice crease all down the driver side of my truck. It starts at the front of the rear crew cab half door and goes all the way back to the rear. It buckled the rear panel enough that the tail gate won't open. The cop said he smelled alcohol on his breath, but I don't know if he tested him. Get this...he was driving a rental because he totaled his car last week!

Steel or aluminum studs would be nearly impossible, as the used 2x2 lumber for most of every thing. I traced down all the wiring, and have every wire labeled as to what goes where. I am replacing and moving the wires as I go. I good out the couch/bed and an old van seat they were using. It wasn't even bolted to the floor. I took out the old water tank, brought it in and cleaned it inside and out. I'm putting my 5 battery bank and the inverter inside under the bed frame, as to keep the weight in the center of the vehicle. With hinges in the top of the frame, it will be easy to get to. Putting the kitchen sink on the other side of the wall next to bathroom sink, with new water lines. Im putting the propane hot water heater
under the kitchen sunk to keep the hot water lines short. I'm putting the propane tank under the sink cabinet to keep the propane lines short to the hot water heater and the cook stove. The air conditioner will be powered of of the generator or an AC connection only. The microwave and refrigerator will run of of the inverter, and all of the lights and fans are DC powered. I will have a few AC plugs to power a few things from the inverter, and include a few USB plugs for powering phones and my iPad. I've working like hell to have it ready by Tuesday for the Bonnaroo run.

We'll drop a Home depot shed on the back and cut a door going through to the cab and you can stuff your shit in it, wire some lights, put a porta pottie in it and we'll call it good.

How does that sound?

I finished the RV today ahead of schedule ...this is what it looks like...http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/rv/5AABE5F7-ADEE-413E-9659-FA35CC09DD75_zpscfhgcm3g.jpg (http://s48.photobucket.com/user/gantsum/media/rv/5AABE5F7-ADEE-413E-9659-FA35CC09DD75_zpscfhgcm3g.jpg.html)

There was just too much to do still. I could have thrown it together, gone to Bonnaroo, but I would have to take everything out, just to start over and do it right. Now I can take my time, and do it right.

Actually, not half bad. I had (HAD) plans to something similar with a longbed pickup once I got out to TN. The footprint of a Tuff Shed would be the wildcard in such a plan.

That's a big towel you threw in there, but it sure looks better than the other one.

That’s a negative sir. It was just too hot this summer, and I was planning to take it back this fall. But since I got remarried, I had to turn all attention towards the new building so we have some more storage space until we get everything figured out what we will keep, what to scrap, and what to sell or give away.

Sir, I can make no ironclad promises at this time, save that I WILL be in TN in March, even if I have to crawl.

That said... has anyone made offers on this item, given the work and materials you have put into it to date?

No offers have been made as I was not planning to sell it. It was going to be used for the 2 of us and the grandkids for weekends on the lake. I have everything to make it fairly comfy, just not much time these days. But as I say it wasn’t for sale, everything does have its price.

Well, this may change a few things. My super duper solar powered prepper mobile death wagon from hell is now to finish its days as a food truck. From hidden weapons cache to food earning cash. So, I’ll just change a few things, toss in a 2x4 here and there, a few doilies perhaps, a baking oven, a 20 qt. mixer, sprinkle on the fairy dust...POOF...a food truck. Why in the hell did I ever buy that damn thing.

That beauty of an RV was destined to spend the rest of its retirement keeping the grandkids all comfy and cozy at the lake after playing all day in the water, to sleep of a bender of s’mores. Enter Bonnaroo again, as if it was predetermined to be so. I was going to take the Missus in it last year, but things went the way side. And now, if we remember or history, she owned a bakery. Enter Bonnaroo again, and now she would like it to become a food truck to sell out of at Bonnaroo. Right now, it’s still in the test study 1.0 phase I have a ton of paperwork to turn in just to see if we would be accepted as food vendors there. It costs a small fortune to get in, and you have to work like a dog, but the profits can let you sit pretty for a while. So, I think we will know something in the middle of March, and take it from there.

OOPS...did I say I was fixing an old Chevy RV...I meant I was fixing an old GMC RV. After spending way to much on supplies to fix up the old Chevy, I took most of everyone’s advice on here and gave in. I could have done it, but there was just no end in sight of the water damage. So, with the Mizzus home for sale in AL, she won’t have a place to stay when we visit her family. So I bought an old 1987 GMC RV in town there. It’s not in too bad of a shape. I’ve been working on it. So far, I replaced the bed, converted it from double to queen, replaced the electrical power supply that resembles something from this century. I’m putting in most of what I bought for the Old Chevy. The new vents, the new lights, new batteries, 3 boxes of laminate flooring, putting in the new generator I bought for the Chevy, as well as the instant hot water heater and microwave. I’m using the jack knife couch from the old one as it’s in better shape that the new old one. Installing the new water tank info brain with new sensors, and water pump. What to do with the old Chevy, I think the plan is for me to use a lot of the spare parts and use them in the food trailer I think I am making this fall/winter for the bakery. I’ll use the water tank/ grey water tank, air cond unit, gas burner, and a few other parts. So, sometime in the next few months, I’ve got to finish the building electrical wiring I’ve been working on, and whip up a food trailer.
So, I guess what I’m trying to say here is...does anyone want to buy a slightly used Chevy RV. It’s a fixeruper.

Oops, did I say GMC...I meant Ford. I’m sick and damn tired of fixing up old RV’s. The old GMC has served it’s purpose as providing the missus and I a place to sleep while we were fixing up her home in AL. Well, that’s water under the bridge now. She sold it, and with some of the profit, we bought a newer but still 20 yr old Tiffin Alegro. It has been well cared for, and even the carpet looks like it was installed yesterday. They even threw in a tow trailer. So who’s ready to hit the road.

Domeguy

I can’t wait to invade...um...visit our neighbors to the north. My dream RV route would be to drive north until I hit Canada, then hang a left and drive to Alaska. I’m waiting until they finish the Aleutian Island bridge, then I’ll drive on over to the USSR for lunch, maybe a bit of antique shopping.

Oh, yeah...I see what ya did there...good one, but I did my homework...it’s all fauxcat meat
(pronounced fO-kAT). It’s mainly a mixture of bologna and polar bear meat, with some pickling spices, curry powder, and ketchup. Not quite the flavor of...say a long hair white Persian, but close enough to partner with a crisp, but whimsical French white wine.
