I finally got started on my chicken coop this weekend. I've been in planning and assembling supply mode most all summer. It was good to get it going and something to look at. I have a few pics and will try to describe a little of what I was doing. I decided to go with a 10x12 overall building. This will give me plenty of room for my current flock, but will easily hold 3-4 times as many as I have should I want to increase the size.

These pics are just showing the 1st corner post. Getting this one set to the height and oreintation you want then getting it plumb is very important to having the building turn out square and for the parts to fit together properly. Second shot is of all 4 post set in place.

http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n607/bacpacker/Chicken%20Coop/th_100_3301.jpg (http://s1142.photobucket.com/albums/n607/bacpacker/Chicken%20Coop/?action=view&current=100_3301.jpg)

These show the outside surrounds set in place and of how I attached them to the post. I cut 1-1/2" shoulders in each af the 4 post on 2 sides for the surrounds to sit on. I attached them with 3/8x4" lag screws. I don't think they'll come out.

BP, I don't think administration will allow pictures with that much detail so cut it out. Just throw the wood together and nail it here screw it there and maybe tape a little.....I'm J/K. It makes my coop look bad. I could never let my chickens see it--lol. Keep up the good work. Are you running electric to it? Water?

I'm gonna have a 275 gollon tote to collect rain water. I think that should be plenty for the chickens & hopefully some for the garden just below it. For power I'm thinkin of using a AGM battery maybe 55 amps with a solar charger and run 2-4 led lights from it. I'm also looking for a small 12v heat tape to keep the water just above freezing this winter.

This is my first construction project in years. It's turned out better than I hoped so far.

Sounds like a good plan. I thought about the solar lighting but found they roost with or without the lighting. It would help for warmth but I never lost one to cold, only heat. With water...I take a 3 gallon waterer out each day in winter and run the hose in summer. Keep up the good work.

Re: the Led lights...Here is what we have found. Led and florescent light (CFL) do not give off the kind of light that the chickens want for laying. Chickens need 12-13 hrs of light for optimum egg production. Recommend regular incandescent on a timer.

Thanks A-10!

Didn't know about the color (I assume) of the light. I knew they are different, but wasn't aware it would affect the chickens. Guess I need more solar and battery. :)

By the way, welcome to the forum. There's some great folks here and lots of good info gets passed around. Jump in with both feet.

You can get a small water heater that a plastic bucket can rest on in the winter, they are thermostatically controlled and work pretty well down to about -10F. Also don't forget to get some oyster shell to mix in their food and leave a little sand or gravel around so they can get some into their crops for grinding their food. Your coop is so nice they may not have access to dirt!

bacpacker

I've saw those at tractor supply, but I'm not planning on having AC power out there. I'm mixing in thoyster shells already( I hope they begin laying in the next month or so).

Once the coop is done } plan on having a large fenced in area for them torun in thru the day. Thanks for the tips.

Hay Bacpacker how may chickens are you going to be running in your coop? Will your outside run be covered? We have a problem with the hawks so we are looking at covering ours whenever it gets built, currently on the honey due list. I read somewhere that the wire around the run should be buried so that critters can't dig under the fence. It makes sense and I am going to incorporate it into mine.

bacpacker
09-22-2011, 09:19 AM
I'm planning on putting down. Some wire around the perimeter of the run and probably covering the outside with some rock. I've read recently about using heavy monfilament (20lb test or better) to run back and forth to keep hawks and such out. Another though is the dark window mesh.
I currently have 12 that are 5 months old, but 5 of them are roosters and will be going in the freezer before long. Will keep one or two to breed. I have buff orpingtons, what breed are you going with?

LUNCHBOX

BP, something else about the covering. My small cage area is 8' tall and they were flying up and out. When you make your run make sure you cover it. I have 30+ and 7 are free ranging waiting for a room in the hotel, also known as the "freezer"--they are some of my males. Another thing, once they remove all your grass you can get some sawdust/sand to throw down for them to bathe.

We used to have bantams that would just run loose. The little banties were scrapers and seem to really be able to survive. There was just not much to them. Later on we got some leghorns. We never really had a coop just a big open pen with lots of ducks and a couple geese. I am just getting re-educated to what is out there. I have not a clue as to what the chickens are that you listed. I was down at the farm supply and they has some that were meat chickens that looked good I forgot what the name was. I so like the idea of putting some chickens up at my BOL but that is not going to happen unless we were up there a lot more. What I was thinking about doing is I have a neighbor next door up there that I was going to see if he wanted to raise some too.

Check out
Raising BackYard Chickens, Build a Chicken Coop, Pictures of Breeds (http://Www.backyardchickens.com)
They have a section about breeds and a chart showing different characteristics of the breeds. Makes it easy to compare.

The buff orpingtons are a heavy bird, roo's go 9-12 lb's, hen's 7-9. Should lay 225-275 eggs per year per bird. Go broody pretty easy, and are suppose to be good raising their young. I felt like they were a good combination for potential shtf situations where I would need to increase the flock quickly.

I did quite a bit of research on breeds and was leaning this way. Met a guy on another forum that lives a little east of me, went to visit and got to look his flock over. I was sold.

Well here is a few more photo's of what little I got finished today before the rain hit.

These show the decking getting started. I decided t go with pressure treated 1/2" wood. I know if will be wet and nasty with the chickens on it. Plus I don't know how quick I'll get the roof on it and with my luck it'll start raining and noit quit for a while. I was worried the regular plywood would seperate. This last picture is just the pile of lumber I got today. Should be most everything I need except the siding. It looks like I'm gonna have enough, or close to, metal roofing from what is being used on the house.

I really cant justify the cost. Other than I will almost certianly increase my flock size in the next year or two. I wanted to go big enough with it to accomadate a large increase in flock size and I wanted something that would last me as long as I want to fool with chickens. It took a lot longer to build this wall with the door in it. Plus this wall and the one going up tomorrow is higher on one end (for the roof pitch) so each board had a angle cut and different length. Just took longer to do than I expected. Learned a couple of things that should help out tomorrow.

It is really amazing at times how well the old school hand tools work for certain jobs. Today gave me a chance to practice doing some construction by hand. Probably how things will be done after SHTF.

BP, just a thought, I placed a few screws in my boards also. Those new boards may want to bow as they dry. (some of mine did) I also nailed my nails in at an angle to help. The horse stalls are the only ones I didn't do this cause I wanted the "witch" to be able to kick them off if she felt the need to.

Your roof runoff collection... for every 10 foot by 10 foot (100 square feet) of roof surface, one inch of rain produces 62 gallons of water. :)

Evolver thanks for the calculation. I knew there was a formula, but wasn't sure what it was. My roof is gonna end up about 168 Sq Ft so about 6-8" of rain should fill them. Those will fill in the spring without a lot of issue in a semi normal year.

I got to work on the coop some more this weekend. Here are some shots thru yesterday.

It was late when I finished last night and started gathering up my tools.

I have the automatic chicken door on my coupe, I love it. I can leave for the weekend and the chickens can still go in and out by themselves.

What are you going to use for the inside walls and floor? In ours that's still in planing I'm thinking about using FRP Wall Panels Shop Sequentia 0.090"D x 4'W x 8'H White FRP Wall Panel at Lowes.com (http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=8566-293-FTSTF.1&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3162499&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1) that way we could go in with a hose and spray it down once or twice a year.

I've avoided this thread thus far in a vain effort to stave off jealousy. didn't work.

Great Job BP... looks awesome.

And I'm stealing everything that you did to build my own next year!:p

I've got most of the siding up and all but 1 piece of metal on the roof. Still gotta install the door and windows. I also sided over the opening for the chickens to exit. Gotta cut that our. I'll get some pics up this weekend.

I finally got all the siding and roofing on, all the windows and door installed. We moved the hens in tonight. So far they seem happy. I still gotta get the fence up before I can turn them loose. I also have some small things to finish up with, install the rest of the battens, (I got the ones around the door and 2 windows done) cut out the opening for the ramp for them to go in/out, build the nesting boxes, and roost But I'm glad to have the hens moved. I'm hoping they'll start laying agin before long.

Here's some pics from the past 2-3 weekends work.

Front side with window installed.

Are you leaving the gaps in between the boards?

bacpacker
12-04-2011, 11:29 PM
No. I got started on covering them this evening. The siding style is called Board and Batten. I'm calling the pieces over the gaps battens. I put the trim around the door frame and 2 of the 4 windows tonight. I also got counts and lengths of what I need to cut them all. It's suppose to rain this week, so I'm gonna try to cut them up and install them next weekend.
I also have small area's above the top sill between the rafters I'm gonna put chicken wire in to cover that space.

My house is board and batten siding.

After the hail storm we had to pick what we went back with. We ended up going back with vinyl siding, but went to the borad and batten look. Man it totally changed the look of the house.
We've got a 2 story and the vertical look fits so much better.

Very nice. I admit, I spent more time looking at your countrysided than I did the coop but the coop is also very nice. I'm sure you will have very happy and productive ladies.:)

Apparently my OPSEC is lacking? :) Hope you liked the shots.

Thanks everybody. This project has taken me a lot longer than I planned, but I have had a good time working on it and using skills I learned years ago. It's been 20+ years since I did any construction work.
