I am sure most of us have seen the devastation brought about by hurricane Harvey down in Texas. I know that a few Search and Rescue units from both Los Angeles and Orange County, Ca. are on scene there to help out.

I would venture to say that many of the Texans have been "prepped" and then had it all go under water.

This is the time where in my area of So Calif. that I consider a major quake to make us more vulnerable and prone to "disturbances." With FEMA currently going all out in Texas, can you imagine what would happen if we had a major event here? No gas, water or electricity? Instead of that 3 days that the government tells you to be ready, it may well be a week to 10 days to see government aid. We could hve bridges and highways down, trucks will not get into large metro areas like the Los Angeles basin, even airport runways could be damaged, making airlifts difficult.

Gee, I better go buy a case of water and some extra cans of tuna! <j>

Great point SoCal. Any major disaster more than a few hundred miles from east Tx, west La would take a while to be reacted to. Pivoting anything as large as the FEMA relief effort quickly just wouldn't happen.

One thing I did this week was to start rotating my fuel supply. Our fuel prices have jumped 34 cents since last Friday. 21 cents in the last 2 days. I could easily see $3 gas by the end of the holiday weekend. I seriously doubt it'll go back to around $2 before the end of the year, if ever again.

Just about every resource available is in TX right now. The Kearsage is en route to the coast for rescue ops, FDNY has sent teams, Arkansas fish and wildlife, Alaska national guard, Puerto Rico sent SAR crews, I think LAFD sent swift water teams, Florida fish and game, there are even disaster response physicians and psychologists coming from Israel. Just about every department in Texas has sent LEO, paramedics, or fire crews down there, I think I saw that even Mexico has search teams arriving. Anything happens anywhere else, it'll be ugly. If Irma makes landfall anywhere in CONUS, it will be bad.

Fuel prices in SoCal are going up too, though it may just be the typical labor day bump. Most places have shown about a dime increase in prices though some are more. Costco, on the other hand has only gone up 2 cents since last Saturday morning.

We have an interesting bulletin board in our area, perhaps it is nationwide in some respects, called NextDoor. It is truly designed for a small neighborhood. Yestereday I posted quite along list of reasons to be prepared and a link to the guberemint's ready.org site. The responses I got ranged from things like, yes, perhaps I should get a case of water to having the "3 days of food and water on hand" to a few of my neighbors who certainly hnted that they are prepped for something longer. I intend to establish some more communications with two of them, one just a 1/2 block from us. While maintaining OPSEC, find out if we are indeed like minded.

Gas in our area went up 13 cents more overnight. Now at 2.49. Haven't saw any shortages yet though.

This price hike is temporary, shop for fuel wisely. Yeah Labor Day price bump is also in there. @ days ago bought gas at 2.33 lowest in area, today that station is charging 2.85 per, while the station across the street is at 2.39 . Go figure.

Price hikes for gas are now about $.20 a gallon since last Saturday in the SoCal area. I figure about a dime each for Labor day weekend and Harvey.

Took a short trip over the weekend. Asheville had gas from 2.69 and up. Back home today it's up to 2.55 and up. I haven't saw any shortages yet, but did hear of a few around Knoxville from friends over the weekend. Prices stopped rising on Saturday. Hopefully the crunch has passed for now. Whatever shakes out the next few days, get ready for what Irma has to bring. This ain't over yet.

A couple stations here have dropped their price back to 2.49 from 2.59. But none of the others have budged. I don't expect much change for another week or two with Irma coming inland. Unless it maintains the westward track, then it could take a big jump up.

Does anyone else find it interestsing that several of the big breweries have sent several trucks to the Houston area, loaded, not with beer but with canned water that is to be distributed for free?

It is a common practice that beer and soda manufacturers have been doing for ages. It gives them good PR, and one hell of a tax deduction.
