Pre-SHTF, I want to set up my mountain bike with a hard gun case where I can carry a hunting rifle. has anyone done this? or seen this done?

I'm thinking I'd like to utilize the kolpin case, so I can pop it off my quad and onto the bike somehow...

thoughts?

I have not seen this done, but if you run across some good info, please share it with the rest of us. Putting a rifle case on my bike would give me a really good reason to get off my ass and ride the damn thing.

I've got a rack on the back of it and a set of paniers already. I'm thinking something like this:

Wholesale Sports (http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/firearm-ammo-storage/gun-cases/gun-boot-iv-loop-bracket/prod245182.html)

And yeah, I've been riding my bike all over hells 1/2 acre, with my rifle slung on me, and it is a PITA.

I've got a moose hunting trip coming up, and I'll be able to use my bike to get into some pretty remote areas... If I can make something work

LOL!

I think at the point where I actually get one, I'll ride back to camp for the quad and trailer. Not by choice though... moose just cant operate the brakes with hooves.

An AR-7 .22 rifle that stores in its own stock is the only rifle I can think of that could be attached easily to a mountain bike. Otherwise, there just isn't a whole lot of room on a bicycle frame.

Ever hear of a rifle sling? Put a sling on your rifle, put your rifle over your back, and pedal your bike wherever you want. French soldiers and English soldiers did this during World War I. This eliminates the hard case and keeps your rifle ready to use. Your body cushions the rifle so it doesn't take the hard shocks it would if attached to a bicycle frame. That's the best I can come up with...hope it helps.

During WWII the Nazis used a lot of bicycles with a variety of long guns slung across their backs from full sized mausers to smgs...

Um... yeah...

Except that when riding (snomo, quad, bike, whatever) I never sling a rifle on my back, always on the front.

If you ever take a tumble, there is nothing you can do to protect your gun, and it will get smashed, bent, dented or something... AND you will also pound it into your back and most times this will result in broken ribs.

I have a folding rifle that would be easy to transport (fits in a camelback bag) but probably not very effective for hunting.

This is the Worksman Tricycle I mentioned getting for $150 a couple of months ago in the what have you done to prep this week thread. $16.53 later this is what I have ready to go.

I am actually looking at a 4 wheel garden cart as a trailer. And there are clips made that will attach to forks for any number of things.

from that website I posted earlier... a nice write-up, and possibly an option for those not close to their BOL.

I know if I had to bug out home from work the first place I would hit is the local highschool to appropriate a bike.

I have been thinking on what to do if shtf happens up here on the ridge. Gasoline would soon run out, and if I did have a stockpile of gas, the sound or sight of me using it would be like moths to a flame. So it's a quiet bicycle for me, but I can't carry much on just a bicycle. So last year I got to thinking over the winter and drew out a few rough plans. I got on craigs list and found a used children carrying bicycle trailer (can't think of what they are called). I striped it down to the frame, and started adding aluminum angle for a frame, bolted on aluminum sheeting, and added a aluminum top. I can now pull quite a bit of weight, and my grandson likes to be pulled in it. I'll try to post some pictures if I can remember how.

This the mostly finished trailer with top. The entire trailer is made from stainless steel and aluminum found from the recycle center. The green one is another idea for a bike/atv trailer made from a aluminum military box...it's still a work in progress. I want to change my design to make it more simple. I also want smaller wheels to make it closer to the ground. By the way, I've got a bunch oh these military boxes I could let go of for a reasonable price.http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f226/gantsum/12b849c4dddcd5689be27ede9763ea54_zps3dbbea34.jpg

In high school, while all the cool jocks were dating the cheerleaders and driving Trans-Am, Monza, Corvettes, I was riding my SUPERCOOL looking bright yellow Bativus moped, with a 49cc engine, and twin orange flags waving in the breeze as I motored through town. I would from time to time, take her down hill ( I lived in Chattanooga, TN at the time) at fill speed, just to get her up to 30 mph. So who was the big loser here...yeah, that's right...we all know who.

ok, guys. i have seen the ones that ST is talking about. they are loud and noisy. pretty cool, though. still i'd rather have a Duo Bike. you know one that does on road and off road. around here a moped or motorized bike wouldn't get me far.

edit. after thinking for a minute. i'll pass on either. if i am bugging out, i want to be as quiet as i can. don't want the 'bubba's' following me. (save my bullets for something important) besides i can hide me tracks on foot.

I've given a serious look at those motopeds. The survival model is still a couple months until release....then figure backorder. They're spendy plus the 2500 is before shipping and an engine. It's a fairly serious bike with some higher end parts. Not all top shelf, but a comparitive downhill bike costs a bit itself. I'm not sure how powerful the 49cc engine would be, especially with the weight of rider and loadout.
I just thought it would be good for me since I don't have a motorcycle license, I live on the city, I've had experience with those types of bikes and have raced competivly.
I can't really get a motorcycle here and make it a bug out bike. But this thing falls under the motorized bicycle category. So long as it's under 50cc.

People have done wild things with theirs. The dirt bike looking one has been out for a while.

This is a pretty cool thread. We have mountain bikes that we ride on some local trails. I would like to outfit mine with some panniers and a rear rack for carrying small loads.
"Off Grid" magazine did an article a while back on bug out bikes that really got me thinking, and "Be Ready" magazine is advertising a BOBike article in a "In the next issue" 4 page add, in the latest "Shotgun News". Point is.... It seems Bug out Bikes are hot right now.

Question:
Has anyone had any experience with airless tires? How do they ride? Any issues with them coming off the rim, etc...
I want to try a pair, but I haven't done my research yet.
Not having to worry about rupturing a tube in a glass and nail environment would be huge.
This is the one I'm looking at.

Hello.

Not strictly -a- bicycle, but rather two... I've been noodling in my head the idea of two identical bicycles with the drive trains dropped, and the frames linked with hollow square pierced metal stock (think road sign supports) into a single towed cart, ala Mormon handcart. Preferably a pair of fat-tire 26"-29" single speeds with modern (read: light and strong) frames. "Beach cruisers", I think they used to be called. Fill the tires with solid tubes, keep the drive trains handy for breaking down one back into a bike if need be.

Lightweight is gonna be a sine qua non, as I am looking at sometime soon going up into some fairly crusty sandstone ranges with a rig like this, if only for a test run, preparatory to the Real Thing.

In eager patience to put my 1885 Morgan on as an avatar,

Interesting idea, if I am following correctly. Do you have a cocktail napkin sketch that you can add to clarify a couple things? upload to photobucket and copy/paste the image code into your text.

Sounds really interesting!!

In addition to a pull cart, would there be any reason why two riders couldn't use the set up to traverse?

I hadn't considered the matter... I am that grimmest of preppers, the solo. The Mormon cart idea, coupled with modern materials already partly assembled, appealed to me, well-hammered thumbs and all.

I'll have a sketch in the next 24-48 hours.

My design only dropped the drive train, not lost it altogether. When one is gotten and established at their destination, the framework unbolts. No welds. Restore the pedal crank and chain, reattach the handlebars, and voila! beach cruiser.

As to multiple pedaling, side by side would have way too much torque from the least difference in pedaling speeds. In-line would be preferable, I think.

Mama told me NO!

I have been toying with the idea of a road bike which would serve as dual purpose. I saw one of these bikes at the SHOT show this year and they are built like a brick shit house. BUT they are pricey at $1,500. The thing I like about them is they are designed to be abused and still hold up.

http://www.safariland.com/bikes-and-accessories/safariland-kona-patrol-bike---29in-wheel-1229.html

Fuji and Cannondale also make bikes, I just have to figure out which one and how much I can afford.

I only have one nit to pick, in that I think you'll need a X-brace from the axles to the seat posts to keep it stable.

bolting them together, end to end, removing the tub and bringing up the sides with square stock. Putting one partly taken down bike in there with the cargo, for spares, should need arise.

There will be differences. The loads I aim to carry with this rig are far more efficient, heavier, and will not be being paraded around in the city.

You will NEVER see me homeless. Bugged out, yes.

I agree. However it is amazing how ingenious these guys are. They are out there everyday trying survive. They have simple things they have scrounged and they work. Single and two wheeled carts, baskets etc.
