Anyone have any water to cross if bugging out, or getting home if SHTF??

seems pretty mickey mouse... but it would probably do in a pinch!

check out the video below (on the link) of the freestyle canoeing... wild!

This something that concerns me greatly. I have 2 major rivers to cross between the house and work. My best route will take me just below large dams on each river. They are close enough I could go by the lake if they are spilling or generating. I have 34 miles to go and the rivers are 10-12 miles apart. I have found a portable boat which I don't know how well it would work, but only weights 26 lbs. Another thought was to get 2 of the manually inflatable life jackets with multiple inflater cartridges. That would suck in the winter though. Still searching for a good solution.

It will start, it has a full manual mode. No electronics needed, it would be a pain in the butt to start, but can be done. I have spare parts offshore to do what I need. Other than that, not many options.

Sniper-T
10-23-2011, 05:23 AM
Interesting... and good to know, I didn't know there was such a thing as manual mode on them birds. Do you have to spin the rotor to get it going? (I think I remember reading that some small planes would operate this way)

helomech
10-23-2011, 02:04 PM
No, the battery and the starter have to work. But both should work in a EMP. The electronics in the aircraft are used in the auto mode. The aircraft will revert to manual mode if anything is wrong with the electronics.

Small aircraft will start by spinning the prop over, but helicopters won't. Helicoters have to be able to free wheel the rotor so you can land in the event of an engine failure (auto rotation). When you spin the rotor of a helicoter the engine does not spin over. Small aircraft the prop is hooked directly to the engine, so by spining the prop you are turning the engine over. And then all you need is fuel, because the magnetos will fire even with no battery power.

I think off-grid or recoil did a segment about Bug-Out-Boats this month, all in all, I wasnt impressed with their mindset on it. I did a lot of sailing back in the late 80's down in the Carib including running away from hurricane season, and its surprisingly easy to survive on a boat if you have a way of managing your fresh water. Im still a fan of bug out boats, and living near the Ole Miss river, its someth9ng that I have taken into consideration if I need to really get out of dodge.

One of her nick names is the "Vomit Comet" (just for you MTR) I've had her up to 50knts, 320ft long and 87ft wide. 13ft draft. she'll spin on a dime and needs no assistance pulling in and out of port (tugs). All we did was put our NAVY gear on it with a few mods. It's all aluminum so it's pretty much expendable.......... but we really tried hard to break it. SWIFT is still sailing today.

Now that was a topic of discussion quite often with every persons first ride. But it was these four jet drives that squirt these columns of water about 3+ feet thick, creating this massive rooster tail that stretches as far as the eye can see Laddy. That, that's what makes ya think about gettin a real long rope!

Cut and paste the link this will give you some general specs.

I almost got blown off a offshore platform by a 200 foot supply boat with 4 jet drives. I was trying to swing onto the boat and he had the two left engines in reverse and the two right engines in forward trying to fight waves and current. A large swell caused the two right drives to come out of the water and the two very large jets of water barely missed me. Scared the crap out of me, all I could think of was being thrown into the structure with all those barnacles.

Ok, so I like the specs on it, but nowhere in the specs does it give a nautical mile operating range? I went on a wishlist fantasy day where I looked up things I would buy if I ever won the lottery, and a expedition yacht was one of them, usual nautical range on them is around 5000-7500 miles with a standard load of fuel. I figured with the loadout I was planning, I could actually triple that easily by cutting down on amount of people and equipment I would be carrying. Basically Im looking for a rig to get me and all my friends & cohorts to my private island that I plan on buying once I win the powerball lottery! http://www.vladi-private-islands.de/en/island+buy+taiaro-atoll+french-polynesia+pacific-ocean/

Here I am with the 33 foot SeaRay Sundancer I bought when I came back from a successful contracting tour in Iraq, It was the biggest boat Ive owned to date, and trust me when I say, the only thing that hurt about that boat was filling it up with fuel at the docks! My end goal is to go bigger and hopefully have it as a option if ever needed. Ive co-captained a 90 sailboat for a few months and that was great, less reliance on fuel made for a fun trip!

Just researched your FPB-97 there Stormy. Nice fuckin rig. I'm sure you just happened to pull that one out of your ass by natural selection or something? They put alot of research into that puppy, fin stabilizers will help, John Deer mains? Hmmm? OK, bow keel design similar to sailing vessel. A well thought out space plan, clean design. There's one for sale in New Zeland, You buy I'll drive her back for ya. I'll take you along for ballast if you like. Might take a while she only cruises around 11 knots so it might take a few months to get back so now might the time to go get her. While the weather's still good Lad.

They're built in New Zealand. The first FPB-97 is still being built. Personally, I think the FPB-78 is a better design (for us). Worth the money, but it is a lot of it.

The designer has a long history of coming up with great long range designs, originally in sail. He and his family have also cruised the world, and written how-to books. His basic design strategy is long and skinny, for efficiency. I sailed (briefly) on a Deerfoot sailboat, and they are long, skinny, and fairly quick for a boat that size. We even thought about buying one, but we're getting a bit old to manage big sails, and the Dashews have some numbers that show their FPB's cost about as much to operate as a sailboat, once you figure in replacement costs of sails and rigging. And with the range they have, strategic fuel purchasing (filling up where/when it is inexpensive) is possible
