I have a lab that likes to go into the garden and take ears of corn off the stock a eat them on the lawn. I always knew that dogs like corn but I always thought that it was the butter on the corn stocks after a barbecue. When I started checking there are a lot of dog foods that contain corn. I decied to check further. So since it is the end of the season I took the remaining ears out of the garden and put them in a pile for him. He will eat two or three a day, the entire corn cob and all. He just likes to supplement his normal food by forgeing for himself. So now I am putting away more corn seeds to help him through along with us.

Depending on the SHTF and the dog, maybe I won't feed the dog but it will feed me. (OK, I am just joking)

I have a 120# lab ... I subsidize his dry food with table scraps already, so when the dry runs out... just more table scraps. or I'll just shoot critters for him.

My TAST will eat whatever I eat and act like its her best meal ever, Corn on the cob is a real treat to her too. About half an ear is all she can handle tho.
My cats on the other hand are going to be a bit trickier. Cats will not survive long as vegetarians. Short term fine, long term not so well. Cats must have taurine in their diet or they will develop all kinds of problems. Taurine is abundant in meat. The 3 of them are rescued, declawed inside cats so not a lot of mouse action for them. Doubtful if they would survive on their own.

Cool. This is post 223. Good SHTF number

Oooh... didn't think about the cat!

Yeah the dog would eat that too.

lol

but seriously, my cat is already on a high protein diet (meat) as she is diabetic. 3 weeks after SHTF, she'll be out of insulin, and then her days are numbered.
:(

Hadn't thought about corn for the dog. We have a 75lb golden retreiver. She eats dry only. I am stocking bags for her. I'm already growing corn for the chicken's, guess that needs to expand for the dog to.

I prefer cats, but it's hard for me to finish a whole one;)

Seriously, when my first doberman passed this year after 13 years of loyal service, I got a blue heeler, Mad Max. He'll eat about anything that isn't nailed downed. My last dobie, Sadie, before she passed taught him to excavate for gophers and he's discovered that he has a taste for rodents, so I have little doubt that he will eat anything I do. And, as he is a smaller (~50 lbs) dog, my dog food bill has shrunk considerably.

Feed them the people they catch trying to steal supplies?

(Now this was supposed to get laughs, not advocating violence) :)

Sounds like a good idea if times are bad.

I don't think I could do it to ol' Big Bird.

I'll just stick to my canned goods if it came down to that.......................

I was not really joking either. I was just keeping it friendly to our dog lovers audience. ;)

You have to do what you have to do, and do they really taste like chicken. If that is so then what does the cat taste like.......?.

I am looking at getting another dog and he will more for my protection. I had a German Shepherd that I used to work. I will want to be keeping him in as good of shape that I can. I know pets are pets however this one will be more like a tool to take care of the family. Years ago I used to work for my Uncle he had 8 or 10 cow dogs. We would cook up a dry powder that came from a feed store. It would look like canned dog food when it was done. When it was really cold out the dogs would get a hot meal. Has anyone heard of dog food like this?

My dog eats me out of house and home. He is just over a year now, and I don't know what he weighs, but he is 28" at the withers and still growing. I think he will curtain off at about 30".

He costs the same amount to feed monetarily as two 1000lb horses. (Price of good timothy hay around here is very cheap at 1.75 - 2 bucks a 50-60 Lb small bale). I supplement his dog food, with lots of regular food as he is so huge and needs the extra nutrition.

BUT, as I am training him, he'll have to earn his keep. He already lets me know when a moose comes within 50 acres of the house. So not having to go out on hunting trips if SHTF, ... well that alone would make him earn his keep. :) So, I won't be eating him! :) Plus he's a stud, and if S did HTF I could PIMP him out! :)

Ours have been eating mostly rice and raw meat for a couple of years now. They also will eat most vegetables.

I have a chihuahua, hard to guess that about me huh? Even though it's small, it can eat an amazing amount each day. I've got maybe 25+ lbs of dry dog food stored for her, but if that runs out then she'll have to live on scraps. The two kitties are both very old, but very youthful. You'd never guess that one was almost 17 and the other 16. I've got several big bags of food stored for them and it will be carefully rationed if need be. Even our bird has several bags of seed stored.

My worry is when the dog goes outside to do her business. She's small and maybe hard to get a bead on, but you all who have big dogs might ought to watch/guard them very carefully when they're outside. Starving neighbors will kill them.

do you prep their rice for them? I once knew a guy who made arrangements with a local chinese resteraunt for their surplus rice. he'd swing by every couple days and grab a garbage bag 1/2 filled, take it home, proportion it and freeze it. He had two huge sheps, and that 'used' rice made up the bulk of their daily food.

ie... this is the stuff they cooked, but had left over at the end of the night... or the second or third!

My dogs will have to eat our scraps, or what ever they can kill. If I get hungry enough the dog will be lunch.

Sniper-T

better watch out for what you encourage them to kill.... If they get 'wild' enough, and hungry enough... you may end up as lunch for them...

Not worried about that. My dogs are well trained. I can take food from them anytime I want.

me too. that's part of 'training a dog' in my views. nice to see I'm not alone. I can offer my beast 1/2 a steak.... let him take it, then with a hand gesture, make him drop it, and take it back. and make him sit while i rub it all over his gnaw toy, and wait until I release him again!

Exactly anyone that can't do that with their dog is not the Alpha leader. I have had many exotic animals, up to Servals, and monkey's (have 2 monkey's right now) and if they don't see you as their leader you are screwed. My dogs are not allowed to beg, they get fed only when I feed them. I throw scraps in the compost pile, and they are not allowed in it, even when I am not around.

LMAO, he does that since we had his canine teeth removed. Didn't want him to bite a stranger

The cat is a African Serval. For an idea of his size the squares on the chain link are almost 4 inches high. He weighed about 45 lbs.

Helo, where did you get your coati mundi? In the southwest (AZ/NV) they are sometimes known as miner's cats, as the oldtimers would keep them as pets when they were prospecting. I've always wondered what they were like to have.

helomech

I can't remember where my wife got them. You could check our friends web site wildanimalworld.com. They can make good pets, but removing their claws are a must. They don't mean to hurt you, but their claws are huge and when they try to climb you it hurts like hell. They are not the cleanest animals though.
