So no kidding, was doing some exploring the other day, and a friend mentioned this underground bunker complex. Me being the guy I am, I said, lets go check it out! So we took a quick 15 minute drive from the house and he showed it to me! I have to say I was instantly impressed! Its in the woods, and its a Buried concrete bunker, 3 entrance points, metal gates covering the entrance, entrance hallways were approx 100 feet long, led to 2 large rooms, air vents in the roof which was about 6.5 feet up. The hallways themselves were only about 5 feet tall, which was a bit of a pain in the ass to negotiate, but once we got to the rooms, it was pretty nice! Im going to take a trip out there this sunday and get some pics of the place! The whole area covered had to have easily been 200 x 200 feet square area buried approximately 3-4 feet down underground! I think I found me my new Nuclear BOL! The air pipes leading to the ground above were actually extremely hard to find they had been camouflaged so well! Has anyone else every wandered onto something like this? Is it a good idea to plan on using this in the future in case SHTF? What do you think folks? And before somebody mentions it, im sure other people know about this as its on a unused area of a military installation thats open to the public. I think the only question is, how many people know about it, and how many people would try to use it in SHTF scenario?

That's the big problem...you fill it up with your stuff and then someone else shows up and wants you to leave but the stuff stays...you're lucky if they don't just kill you.

If I'm at home and someone wants in...I pretty much know what I have to do. There will be no guessing their intentions. Out in the woods...anything goes with any number of guests..

So I assume that it was wide open, easy access? then yeah, expect any and ALL locals to show up there, and most probably without even a BOB.

If it is as sweet as you say... start looking into buying it. then it is yours alone, and you can lock/defend it.

Yes, its somewhat out in the open, but very well camouflaged. I found out that it is a Tornado shelter put in place for troops training out in the field. Its on a military installation, so theres no chance of buying it.
I dont think that while its known im sure to a few military personnel that it probably isnt as well known to the civilian population being as how its in a training area thats usually off limits to civilian personnel

That is cool.

Question, are you the same guy who over at whenshtf started a thread about finding a bunker and the mods got all irrationally belligerent saying it is a shame for a preper to out a preper?

Either way, I am sure none of us would mind seeing pictures if you are comfortable taking a few. I mean we all know OSPEC and don't include a google map, so what could possibly be the problem?

Cheers!

I am NOT that guy. (normally, this is a honor bestowed upon me by most of my friends. . . being "that guy") but this time, I actually am not that guy! I will be taking pics tomorrow and posting up for all to see! If anyone wants a google map of it, do it by PM, its a open shelter, so its not like I would be able to claim it for my own. Im starting to think of it as a community asset!

I think it probably wouldnt be that hard to do it after checking this place out. Its basically square concrete culvert style sections, laid side by side to form a tunnel, with large rooms incorporated into it. Once you have them laid down, and the rooms poured, then all you do is put in the air vents and cover the entire area with dirt and replant/camouflage. After that, you can take your time and work on the entrances/exits, and other things such as lighting, security gates, plumbing, ect ect.

This was so awesome and thank you for taking your time out to go and take the pics for us. I especially like the ones of the entrances...they show how to hide them properly from the road/view and when ya have enough of your own property this is very much doable.

The funny part is, when we first got there, my buddy actually forgot where exactly the entrance points were, so we had to look around a bit! If you look at post #10, picture #2, thats how close we was parked to an entrance and we didnt even know it! I think good camouflage is the key to hiding one of these. Notice the use of deadwood and rocks to hide the entrances and air vents?

^ exactly what I was thinking. All of that entrance wood looks like it was put in place within the last year. In the pictures it looks like zero signs of weathering.. I assume being where it is, there is no hunting there? around here someone would have stapled a target on there and blasted a bunch of holes in there.

cool site, and thanks for the pics.

The wood looks as it does in the photos. But the bunker has been in place for at least 2 years. As I stated before, this is located on a military installation, out in the training areas, so there are no hunters allowed out there. And as far as somebody pasting targets up and blasting away at them, usually the only people with weapons are the military guys, and those are big machine guns!

Just got a look at the thread. Too bad it wasn't in your back yard. But again, people can use the intell here for some ideas of their own. Great RECON! Good to know for you if it were necessary you'd need to use it. ON short notice that is. So how far do you have run to get there again? OK good structural designs with the pressure trated lumber and the placstic back to aid as a moisture barrier. That will proplong the life of the lumber a bit more. Hey at least I can see some of my tax money went to work. I'm taking notes..............thanks.

I wouldn't exactly call it a bunker.
It looks more like a training tunnel complex. It really doesn't offer too much protection. You can be seen from all the entrances. The doors...offer no protection. The air hole on top is just grating that anyone could drop a grenade or tear gas or smoke bomb in.

Brownwater Riverrat 13

OK, so construction wise, how does it look like the concrete was done on the inside? Poured walls with slab ceilings? Pre-fabbed and set into place? Professional or just so-so concrete work? And I know you're going to tell us what's in the boxes right? he, he, he,............

I would call it a bunker, since that is exactly what it is. If you look closely at the pictures, you are actually wrong in regards to several things. The protection level here is actually pretty high. You cannot be seen from any of the entrances if inthe rooms, and the rooms offer plenty of hiding/storage/living space. The doors, while only metal grate doors, are exactly that, metal grate doors. If you dont have a torch or a breaching style explosive, how you do plan on getting thru them? The Air vent above the grating is pretty heavy, and its formed into the concrete itself. So theres no chance of dropping any of those previously mentioned items into the actual bunker itself.

The construction is top notch. After I did some research into them, I found out a company was actually contracted out to build these. The concrete work is high grade, they look to be pre-fabbed squares with male/female ends that go together to form a tunnel all the way to the rooms. The rooms are poured walls with slabs and no sign of moisture at all. Its actually pretty dusty inside. As far as the boxes, I think they was put in there as training aids, since this area is used for deploying units as a training area for Afghanistan. As for whats in them, nothing at all. They are old ammo crates used to transport training simulators, ground burst, hand grenade, ect ect. While empty, they make great storage crates since they are built heavy and even have rope carrying handles!

Ooooooooooooohhh, the possibilities! Well it sounds like I got my moneys worth but they put it in the wrong location! In case no one hasn't pointed it out. Note the color of paint that the wire mesh is painted on the doors and side panels to the entrances. Bright and kinda matching the concrete. Tactical advantage of this is the you can see out but you can't see in. (makes people want to stick their face right up there so you can poke their eye out) Same applies with the greens when applying camoflage to your tunnel or bunker entrances. Using the wire grating as a first defense before the actual door to your bunker/tunnel gives the buffer and the camo. Also provides a staging area for a fast departure, as long as you have a dark interior your conceilment level remains high. Same as establishing a shooting position in suburban areas. Put yourself as far back inside the room as possible giving you the least possible exposure, (less feild of fire) make your shot count and you won't give away your position to quickly. I guess I need to head over to the weps forum......

Be safe.............the night is your friend.
