Freezedried, dehydrated, how long does this stuff really last?

was digging around in my prep closet and found this item way in the back, somehow it slipped through the expired rotation, by quite a bit .
    .

I guess my questions would be , is this stuff freeze dried or dehydrated ?? how long past the expiration date is this stuff still good ?? I guess the only way would be to cook it and see, right....whats the big deal about loss of taste, it would be the marginal nutritional value anyways

    will report back later !!

I fluffed the package really well to distribute the contents, when I first opened it , the color was a little darker than I expected, I figured a white power like substance, as for smell it had a almost burnt cheese smell ?? 4.5 cups of water to 1 cup of soup mix, bring to a boil and simmer ( uncovered ) for 20 min.
the powder didn't dissolve as quickly as I thought it would ?? and the ratio of water to substance was disappointing as the harder stuff all went to the bottom, requiring a lot of stirring, a film continually grew on the top and I would skim it back into the soup

    Should still be good.
You got to pretty constantly stir it when it's new.

I would've cooked it, and eaten it, so long as it didn't smell like something dead I had just found on the side of the road.

^I would've preobably still eaten it, depending on how dead it smelled.

Well, yeah, I was leaning more toward dead, rotting.

Guess I should've been more clear.

Yeah, shelf life on the pouch meals is from 3 to 5 years. Even though the mylar is fairly thick, you still get some oxygen migration.
Of course you haven't compared the "after" taste with the before expiration taste.
It might have tasted like old gym socks when it was fresh!!
