have you tried oiling the wood?

An ex-GF did something similar with an oak desk I have, and it wasn't actually stained, but the heat drew the finish out. a few applications of oil and discolouration was gone.

Where in the world would I find the model number on these things?

It's not like an enclosed bearing. That's all I'm used to. The ball bearings are exposed on the inside and that's what the cone rides on

It has a 1/8 radius on the inside of the bearing, looks like a typical ball bearing except that it has a centering cone the fits onto a 12mm rod. The centering cone has 12mm ID with a 45 degree angle going to a .75 OD with a pin to keep it from spinning on the shaft.

And Realist, I haven't had a drop of alcohol in almost 3 months.
I would dive into the sewing and sewing machine groups on the web. I'm sure someone there could point you to the exact replacement parts you need, but beware, you may end up involved in some pretty shady characters. You may very well end up sewing your own dresses.

Realist-It's a good thing before and after surgery.

ST-I got some old english dark wood. I'm going to try that before anything else.

DG-I thought about it but I haven't been able to find a really active group. I emailed a few bearing companies though to see if they had anything.

Nope, nothing. Can't even find anything that looks like them on any of the websites.
