    Building a new hog trap

This is my 3rd one to build, first was a 4X4X8, and I was very heavy. Second is just hog panels held in by t posts with a door, very difficult to move. So I wanted one I could move easy. This one can be rolled into a trailer and then rolled to a spot with ease. Should be able to finish it tomorrow.

Showing my stupidity here, but how does it work? Do you get inside and call here piggy piggy piggy, and then hit him over the head with a big stick when he sticks his head in the hole?

I am thinking that a determined hog would make short work of that!
Give a man fire, and he'll be warm for a day!
Light a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life!

No way, it is 1 inch steel around the top and the door, and the wire is hog panel. I built 3 all with the same material and never had a hog tear it up. Still got the door and the wire on top and bottom.

The door is not on yet, but it is a root style door. Basically this is a very simple trap, use a stick to prop the door open, put some kind of food inside the trap. When the pig pushes through the door the stick holding the door open falls down. When the hog walks through the door falls down behind them. My buddy has been using this design for about 5 years now and it works great.

Here is a close up of the wire. There is no way a hog will break through.

BTW the trap is 8 foot across, by 3 foot tall.

Nice design. I was wondering how you triggered the door. Does it have a lock to secure it once it closes?

    I stand corrected!

I can't wait to see the pics of it in action.

    Thanks for sharing Helo!

Just the weight of the door keeps it closed. That way more hogs can push it open to get in, but they can't pull it to get out.

Makes sense now. I didn't think about the door being inside and drooping I to place. How many have you tried at once.

Sounds like you all have a large hog population in that area.

My dogs keep the hogs away from my place, but the lease I am on next door had a lot of hogs. My buddy's trap is the same size and he has caught up to 10 hogs at one time with it.
